Using the Built-In Service Installer (multiple client method)
  1. Download the current console client from http://folding.stanford.edu (currently version 5.04 beta)

  2. Create a Folding directory and copy the downloaded client in it.

    • Note: You can name and place the Folding directories per your preferences. However, in this guide we will assume that you are using c:\fah\client1 and c:\fah\client2\FAH.exe. Additional cores may be labelled in the same fashion, but with higher numbers (ie client3, client4, etc).

  3. Rename the client to FAH.exe (optional, but this will make future steps & upgrades easier)

    • Two client example: c:\fah\client1 and c:\fah\client2).

  4. Run each client separately, and go through the config process:

Configuration Notes:
  • Replace my username with your own (unless you're feeling particularly generous )

  • Simply press ENTER to choose the default value (default value is listed in brackets)

  • Recommend users w/ less than 512Mb system memory NOT enable bigWUs (allow receipt of work assignments ... option)

  • Recommend setting memory indicator to 512Mb or 1/2 of system memory (whichever is lower). With multiple clients, split this amount between each client. For example, if you have 1Gb of system memory and plan to run two clients, then set each client to use 256Mb of RAM.

  • Set Advanced Methods to No, even if you plan to enable Advanced Methods (commonly referred to as -advmethods). We will enable the -advmethods flag in a future step along w/ some additional flags.

  • Important: Set a different MachineID for each client! For example, if you're running two clients, set client1 to 1 and client2 to 2.

Customizing your Console Client

Advanced options may be added to the Folding@Home clients through use of FLAGS. However, adding these flags to the Console Client run as a Service entails editing the Windows Registry. Fortunately, there is a tool available that allows you to make the necessary changes without opening up Regedit:

Download pkfsct.zip Here

Using pkfsct.exe:
  1. Download the zipped folder, open the folder, and run the executable file (pkfsct.exe).
  2. Click the "Choose client" button and browse to your Folding client(s) (c:\fah\client1\FAH.exe and c:\fah\client2\FAH.exe in this example).
  3. Select the three options as shown above (Advanced Methods, Verbosity 9, and Local).
  4. Click the "Update registry" button
  5. Click the "Restart service" button
  6. Click the "Exit" button

That it! You should now be running multiple Console Clients set as services!
