AMD's FreeSync 2 tech debuts in a wild 49-inch Samsung HDR monitor

Finally a consumer HDR monitor. Is HDR for gaming only? Is HDR10 for TV? This HDR format thing is confusing to me.

Nice monitor but it's as big as my HD TV 😂. I agree the HDR format is confusing and as usual the manufacturers make it worse by stating a model is HDR10 when in fact it's HDR8 plus some trickery. My new TV has HDR Specific settings you can select that automatically work when the TV receives a HDR signal. Netflix has a few HDR shows but that's about it.

TBH the colours do look better with HDR and there is more detail in the dark scenes but sometimes it's a bit hit and miss. Also the more you pay the better the experience which isn't rocket science. For me i felt it wasn't an issue so I bought a mid range 4K TV with HDR and I'm happy with it. I guess things might get more interesting as more HDR content becomes available. Here's an article I found useful when selecting my TV. https://www.wired.com/2016/01/what-is-hdr-tv/

I have a low to mid ranged Sony X800D which actually is a 10 bit panel. Supports HDR and on 60 Hz but its a damn nice TV for 799.99.

HDR enabled on games is pretty impressive and according to reviews the HDR is average on my TV but it really does add some pop.

What I don't invest in TV's I will be investing in monitors. I spend more time in front of my monitor and I will spend 1500 bucks on a 144 Hz HDR 4k monitor. But I think I will be waiting another year or 2. By then 4k will be almost everywhere maybe even Cable providers will be switching over to 4k HDR.

For me I think 29-32" is the max size I would want. Definitely not more than 32".

Not on the PC, but with Gears 4, the Xbox1S and and a HDR tv there were some definite differences with SDR vs HDR. The lighting was more dramatic and realistic. The section in the museum was where I noticed the most difference. This is a good thing for gamers as it gets more support.

I'm glad HDR + HFR is coming to PCs finally. However, the prices are ridiculous compared to TVs, and if anyone had suggested such a monitor 5 years ago I would've assumed it was a meme. 32:9?

price is reasonable when you look at competing nvidia gsync products. The gsync version of my display costs $100 more than what the 49" fs2 display costs lol. 15" more inches, hdr, 144hz. Point me out to a tv that has similar specs with pricing. Its just nvidias pricing thats ridiculous.

Show me a 70" 4k HDR PC monitor.
Show me one for $1500.

Neither of the above exist. I can go walk into Best Buy and get that in a TV right now. Sure, it won't be HFR, but you can't actually buy that in a PC monitor right now @ 4k either.

since xbox one x does freesync 2 i'll sure a lot of tv will go freesync 2

Yep. There have already been some Freesync TVs announced so FS2 is just a matter of time. Don't get me wrong, I use an HFR monitor for PC gaming. I just use 4k TVs for everything else because they're a way better value.

I am surprised its taking so long to hear about Free Sync 2. There is not much new out there.

What I am waiting for is a Free Sync 2 HDR 10 4K 32" Monitor @ 144Hz.

I am also not completely against a curved monitor... I am not interested in curved TV's but Curved monitors at least make sense practically.

Thing is also with this new DAW and these new plug ins I have I could really use an ultra wide monitor. But I would probably be better off just getting my dream gaming monitor and then just using my current monitor for extra real estate when using it for studio work.

Of course that leads to more projects like where am I going to fit all this ****.

1st world issues.

to upgrade my 40" 4k non FreeSync

I would need 40 to 50 inch 4k FreeSync 2 HDR

or a 55 inch 8k FreeSync 2 HDR
but would need 2 or 3 Navi's to drive it
