Before you toss out that old phone...

...try a new battery.
I have an aging OnePlusOne phone that could barely hold a charge for a couple of hours. Got a new battery from ebay for $10 and now running like a charm. Watched the Youtube tutorial and mission accomplished in 15 minutes. For those simply looking for improved reliability and not needing the latest/greatest phone fad, don't forget this options (especially if your phone is hitting the 2 year mark).

It's a shame phones made it so hard to replace batteries. Especially since they die relatively quickly.

Batts die at 2 years now??? Thats insane. My 5 year old Galaxy Note 2 is slow as crap but battery is still good... easily holds a day charge.

I thought you were going to say:

But seriously, I replaced my battery in my old Samsung S4 Mini and got another year out of it. It was just a cheapo battery off of Amazon and it worked great.
