Have you ever wondered if changing the default Power Management Mode will improve gaming performance or your gaming experience?

It defaults to “Optimal Power” but there is also a “Prefer Maximum Performance” and an “Adaptive” setting. Should you just leave it alone, or are you missing out on extra performance?

We are going to explore this feature with practical real-world testing today.

I hope you posted that article to show the author didn't understand what he was testing.

It seems “Prefer Maximum Performance” might even hurt your performance on certain video cards in certain games. Unless you are having trouble getting your video card to run at the intended clock speeds, don’t enable this power mode. It can actually cause your clock speeds to drop slightly, affecting performance.

Well no ****, Sherlock. This mode forces the GPU to run at maximum clock speeds even when the game or application doesn't need it. And when it gets too hot, clocks drop. Regardless of what the app demands. That means you're going to be running hot and noisy all the time even just playing GL Quake. Or some Chrome web game. :bleh:

This should be left at default (optimal or adaptive) and you don't need an 11 page article to tell you that.

I find I need to set max performance in a couple games as it doesn't boost to max clocks otherwise. Most notably the campaign map in a couple total war titles.
