High-performance AMD Datacenter GPUs
Streaming graphics-rich games to millions of users on demand and from the cloud requires ultra high-performance processing capabilities to minimize latency and maximize game performance. It also requires advanced technologies to tackle unique datacenter challenges, including security, manageability, and scalability.

Custom AMD high-performance Radeon datacenter GPUs for Google Stadia include:

Second-generation High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) to provide power savings in a compact footprint;
Critical datacenter features such as Error Correcting Code (ECC)1 protection to help ensure data integrity;
Fast, predictable performance with security features for cloud-based gaming, via the industry’s first hardware-based GPU virtualization solution built on industry standard SR-IOV (Single-Root I/O Virtualization) technology.

Apparently using a version of Vega 56 in an apu...

Wasn’t this tried before and failed miserably? I forgot the name of the company that tried .. I know it’s Google but I have little faith in this.

I did the Project Stream trial. It works fine, assuming you don't mind 720p, medium-low detail with a bit of input latency. The MacBook/Ultrabook plebs will probably like it.

I think your thinking of On-Live. Which failed, but was bought by Sony and it's tech partially powers Sony's PlayStation Now service(and elements probably also power the other Streaming functions of the PS4). Which has been working out alright for them.

Interesting that they say they are using a Debian-based Linux distribution and Vulkan, So the games are going to be running on Linux?

No mods, compression, internet dependant.. no thanks. Be great, as others said, if you're on a mac book etc. But it won't replace real PC gaming.

No modding and no true ownership of the games, is what really makes me hate this, modding is not what it used to be is true but if this gains traction is the total death of it.

I think this style of services makes sense when your augmenting the ability of a establish game Ecosystem to access the same games another way. Like Sony sorta does and how I'm guessing MS is hinting at.

But when google does it as a completely separate thing to access PC games.... it just feels weird.
