ive gave up with the other drivers , 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3. got a cd autorun of driver 1.4 and no probs wi .dlls failing to register or anything, the software even opens up, to set button tasks, but that elusive little icon in the sytem tray still not there! in the device manager the usb for ati says the device is working properly. ive restarted and did all they checks, im at my wits end now.
why is the little icon no appearing?

I know the feeling dready. I've been working on mine for 3 days straight with different drivers and all the different techniques people have listed in here previously.
I have had my AIW 9700 for years and I've only had the remote working a couple times for a few months at a time. But if there ever is a glitch and you have to reinstall you might as well just save yourself some grief and realize that it ain't going to happen.
The only way I've ever gotten mine to work has been by wipinng everything, reformmatting the hard drive and install it right away, and if you screw up the installation re-format and do it again.
It's absolutely ridiculous and I can't believe that I was foolish enough to buy the 9700 since I had a 9600 on a previous computer (which was also problematic) but I figured that ATI would have gotten their crap together to fix their drivers somewhat rather than make them worse.
It took me two days working non-stop to get the MMC and Cat (Omega now actually) working properly before I started tackling the remote problem which I've been working on for an additional two days getting absolutely nowhere.
I will never ever buy an ATI product again and I will actively discourage anybody I know from doing so also.
