MS Flight Sim 2002

Anyone playing this on an 8500? I have a question which may or may not be an issue.
When you turn on "Reflections" in the "Aircraft" display options...it makes the most incredible looking chrome effect on some of the large planes. It looks very nice...the most realistic metallic effect in a game yet...however this is also the problem. When turning on reflections it puts this metallic look all over the plane and really dumbs down the details and paint schemes on the planes. In essence it makes the plane look almost like an untextured silver plane...even the wheels get chromed.

Is this something that is in need of a patch from Microsoft? Is it something in the 8500? Anyone else confirm this or is it maybe my settings?

You are right about the problem...i saw in ATi website that it is a issue and they are looking at it.
They ask us to wait for a future driver to solve this problem, so it's not your settings.
I also have FS2002 and haven't seen it yet on the 8500, i will soon, but it is a known problem which i hope they solve pretty soon.
I just hope they start doing as they promised, with drivers every 3/4 weeks, beta and final versions.
We really need more drivers, specially to solve minor probs in games or even some driver to work in some troublesome software.
This is my first ATi card that i bought, and if i get dissapointed, i'll never come back, so i do hope for frequent drivers and few probs...if not, back to nVidia.
Just like someone said: " I miss 3DFX " :)
I'm still testing this card and i'm impressed so far, few probs, pretty fast card and nice visuals, so i hope to keep it, but i have to decide soon, since i have 15 days to return it, if not satisfied, to get a GF3Ti200 instead (which i hope i won't).
Does anyone know if Hercules is going to help ATi with drivers??

Great! Thanks alot for that info Madpt. I didnt realize ATI mentioned that on their site. Appreciate the heads up.
Other than that one glitch in FS 2002, the game looks awesome. And that reflection thing seems to be only on the big boeings for me so far.

Hope you enjoy that card Madpt, its a great pice of hardware. Thanks again for that answer.:)

I have never played a flight simulator and so far I have been drooling over the screenshots of this one. Would it be a good one to learn on? Does it have custom difficultly?

Yes this is an awesome sim. You can make it as realistic as you want as far as the flight physics go, and hence make it much more difficult.

And by the way..the newest drivers (9016) fix the reflections issue I originally posted about. The planes and water now look better than ever.

Wanted to trade: My FS 2000 Professional Edition-Concord aircraft files for your FS 2002 Professional Edition-747 aircraft files. Low flight hours. Excellent condition.

I think they are interchangable...

May be a little late in answering, but if you're like me, you have all details maxed out. If not, then disregard. If so, go to the 3rd tab under your FS2K2 display settings and set to default. Then setup as normal, BUT! don't change every setting!! Leave two or three alone. I haven't seen any rhyme or reason, so it doesn't really matter which ones you choose. Whichever ones aren't as important to you (I gotta have my antialiasing!)

The best way is to make the change, and apply it, then go back to your aircraft choices to see if your reflections are ok. Once you get the "silver bullet" look, you've gone to far and have to start again.

What's weird is that only the Microsoft planes do this. I've noticed that 3rd party planes that use reflections aren't affected by this at all.

Hope this helps. :)

Wow cool workaround Piper. Thanks alot. If this hadnt been fixed in the latest version I definitely would have tried what you say.

The silver bullet look is now gone. (although i still have to say that it looked really cool..most realistic metal Ive seen yet in a game):D

Your absolutely right it was just the MS Planes. More specifically the Boeings.

Yeah, that's pretty good, Piper. FSAA when enabled in display made my panels all fuzzy, but I don't think I've tried it with the new drivers installed. I've leaned more toward aniso than FSAA with this card so far anyway.

Pappa Smurf, one of the nice things about flightsim is you can get about as deep into it or not as you want. There are instructional flights with an AI instructor telling yo what do, in fact, they enrolled the head of one of the county's top flight scholls for this. Plus there is a plethora of websites, forums, tutorials, etc.

nomad, I heard the 2K Concorde works in 02. I thought it was stupid for MS to take it out. It's an important plane.

Are there any other must have downloads for MS 2k2 scenery or airplanes? I bought it 3 days ago and MOHAA is sitting unused its case right now and will be for a long time I think this game rocks. Thanks for the suggestion.

I found some pretty cool free 747's at flightsim.com, exterior views only though. Also got some skins for the Microsoft 737, 777 models to replace the phony airlines in FS2000. I went with SouthWest for the 777 and Continental for the 737. They had a skin for the Concord for AirFrance too.

They also got a Concord for you guys with FS2002.

Yeah, a lot of good downloads at flightsim.com. Only thing is logging in can be a pain in the tail sometimes :)

However, my favorite download is from www.simflight.com/fsw (maybe at flightsim, too). It's someone by the name of Chris who remade the night lights. I thought MS was a big improvement. His are much more bright and better lit roads. He also has runway lights and MUCH better clouds available for download.

why do most people make mostly commercial planes in fs2002. If you've seen you've seen them all. There's more comercial jets to download than everything other plane combined. Why is this I wonder?

Stuttering!

Stuttering!

Has anyone solved the stuttering problem in FS2002? I am using a Radeon 8500 on a Athlon 1400MHz machine, and although I get superb scenery and perfect frame rates, I get annoying stuttering. I can minimise this by setting the display hardware to a high resolution but it is still there and it is driving me mad. Oh, and I am using the latest drivers!

Pappa Smurf, glad to hear you're enjoying it. Do a search for a file called new_envo.zip. It has better sun/ sky textures, esp. the sun reflecting off the water. Finding planes for FS2002 is tough, unless you just want eye candy. Some designers at least try to make the planes fly realistically but some don't give a rat's patoot. If you can ever get on to flightsim.com, go to the who's who of designers and try to find planes by them. Part of the problem is a lot of these are just dressed up FS98 planes, and they don't convert well. Right now, in fact, I'm trying to fix an old F-102 that I know was a good plane in FS98, but it's all screwed up in the conversion to 02.

They've got a new B-52 at www.simviation.com that's supposed to be tested by a real B-52 pilot and crew chief. It made my system crash, though. If anyone gets it and can run it, let me know.

In my mind THE add-on to have is FSNav. It's a map, flight manager program that runs in the background.

Bobford, what OS are you using and are you using FSAA, Aniso, etc.? Is the stuttering when the ATC comes on? That slows me down, too.

Thanks for the tip, Piper; I'll have to look for those.
