Will they take advantage of the third texture unit? Once the third texture unit is used Radeon will be faster than a GeForce2 Ultra.

Sounds kinda like T&L and bump mapping. If the game doesn't take advantage of it there is no benefit, right?

Is it also not used when f.e. running a multitexturing game and using trilinear filtering? That would take 3 rendering steps aswell right ...? Or am I talking BS now ... iow is it activated automaticly when it's needed for effects to be done in a single pass or does it have to be adressed by DirectX8/Games ... ?

http://lightning.prohosting.com/~rawfill/ has a handy tool.
A radeon can do a bilinear filtered pixel in one cycle (only needs 2 TMU's for that) but a trilinear filtered pixel needs 4 TMU's for doing that in one cycle i.e. needs an extra cycle. However the third TMU is very handy for Dot3 and EMBM bumpmapping and that is already in a bunch of games. BTW, this is rather theoretical stuff because bandwidth usually determines the speed greatly.
