now that 2011 xeons are out

if i were to build a dual 8 core 2011 system using either the evga or asus dual socket enthusiast board, and throw a crappy video card (say a 5670) in there, what kind of power requirements and memory requirements should i be concerned about? what kind of case would hold that monster of a motherboard, and what other issues might develop that would not normally be a problem with "normal" enthusiast computers?

As far as power goes, the 8 core monsters have a 150 w tdp. From the tests i saw at full load they were pushing around 422 watts.

I wouldn't put anything "less" then a 600 watt PSU in there but i'd lean more toward an 800 personally for extra head room.

I'm unsure if those will allow unregistered dimms, you maybe forced to buy the more expensive registered ram being that it's a server based CPU. I haven't done any reading on it really, so something you'll want to research.

Ya it maybe motherboard bound and not CPU bound, although since the memory controller is on the CPU die now instead of the MB i'd think it's CPU.

Then again maybe intel finally decided to let us choose.

If i recall the toms article i read they had some registered and unregistered, i'd have to look it over again. I more skimmed it to find the power info you were looking for.

just priced it all out...

assuming unregistered ram, the total with the options i want will be ~$5138 before shipping... it may be a couple months until i'm able to get it all. do you know if i can run one cpu while waiting for the other?

That is an excellent question. Just from my general knowledge i'd say yes, but i'm not 100% certain. I'll poke around a bit.

From what i'm reading it's motherboard bound, but most should support that feature in this day and age.

One important thing to remember though is making sure you get the exact same CPU when you finally buy the second one. From what i read it's possible that a different revision of the same CPU could foul things up.

So if you buy one of these new Xeons at Stepping A, and they come out with B or C in the future your gonna want to make sure to get another A (if there even avail). Given that these are server/biz products though i don't think availability would be to much of an issue, though price may not go "down" as you'd expect like in the consumer market.

OHH and make sure you populate the correct memory slots. Each CPU has it's own memory controller, so if you drop ram into the empty cpu's slots it won't do you much good ;)
