Resident Evil series

Similar to the Final Fantasy series thread - wondering which is the best way to play through series on.

I have the ps1 version of the original but never got around to finishing it. I came from a Silent Hill background so I never understood if I'm supposed to shoot my way through.

Should I go through the originals, or is there some remakes that I should play instead?

The PS1 games (1-3) are still fun and play really well, but the dated graphics and controls might be too much for you depending on your standards.

Check out the YouTube channel Avalanche Reviews. He does some pretty in depth RE retrospectives that will answer all your questions.

Personally i prefer the RE1 remake thats on Steam. Its basically an HD version of the GameCube remake which IMO is the definitive version of RE1. Also gives the option for modern control scheme if you prefer. Same advice goes for RE Zero.

RE2 and RE3, the PS1 versions are still king for me. But the recent remakes are also great if you want a modern take.

Code Veronica, I'd play on Dreamcast, PS2, or GameCube. Whatever's most accessible.

RE4, the current remaster on Steam is fine and a great game but there's rumors Capcom is working on that one for the next remake so you might want to wait.

RE5, just play the Steam version. Steamworks got patched in a few years back.

RE6, Revolutions, RE7 - Play on Steam.

As for how to play, it varies by game but mostly you want to take out the zombies in your way but avoid and not waste ammo resources on the ones you can easily run past. You do want to manage your resources as well as possible, especially in the early games. This changes by RE4 where the series got its revolutionary shake up and turned more action-horror.

For me it's RE01-3, 4 was ok, but wasn't RE for me, 5-6 were trash tier Resident Evil, but ok Co-op games. 7 was good but also not really a Resident Evil game IMO.

RE4 also has a HD texture overhaul mod that replaces everything with much better quality textures.

I think I have played RE2, 3, 5 and 7. I tried playing 4 but the stop and shoot mechanic just didn’t sit well with me. I also played Revelations but when I tried Revelations 2 I got stuck badly in a loop of death that I couldn’t get past. I also started 6 and played about 4-5 hours of it before I got bored/side tracked. I did try playing 1 as well (remake) but again the controls etc didn’t sit well with me. And zero I never tried.

I still do not understand the characters except that Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield have some awesome nude mods on PC.

The story and lore in the RE series is actually pretty cool. Or at least to me, might just be ingrained in my childhood and all nostalgia.

Still waiting for someone to make a proper RE movie that's actually based on the game's story.

I've played them all from 1-6 and I only liked 4 & 5...7 to a lesser extent.

I would NEVER play the original RE games on something like the PlayStation when there are much better remasters out there...the graphics on those have NOT aged well at all

i think the controls would be more of a problem than the graphics.....

having to rotate on the spot to turn, and stand still while shooting...yeah those tank controls arent gonna be fun to use.
