Finding something like this in such a mint condition would be like winning a lottery. Nintendo was so ahead of its time back then.

I think Japan got to "test" the viability of these addons in the japanese market. They got all the cool addons.

I dont think they succeeded enough to warrant a worldwide release.

except the Virtual Boy, that just crashed and burned.

In the case of the Famicom Disk System it was the precursor to battery saves in NES game paks. Once they had the tech to save on a cartridge the disk system was no longer needed.

I always heard it was because there was a lasting ROM chip shortage. Once the chips became more available, the disk system was no longer necessary.

From what I understand that was part of why the disk system was initially developed, because of the chip shortage. The floppy disk format was a cheaper and more available option to manufacturer the games.

But as for why it was discontinued, once cartridge technology became cheaper and improved to be able to save via an internal battery the disk system became obsolete.
