smp & gpu

So I've never done a ton of research, but i know that ATI folding is much slower than then green teams side.

That being said I've got a 5870 paired with an i7 860 @ 2.8Ghz
I've also got a 6970 paired with a i7 920 @ stock which i believe is 2.8 as well.

Atm I've got both CPU's cranking out at SMP 8 when I'm not gaming. If i knock those down to SMP 6 and add the GPUs will i see an increase at all?

I just lost a big producer and i'm looking to pick up the slack elsewhere until i can "hopefully" restore it.

each of those should net you close to 10k ppd, so, yeah.

Would you recommend switching over to the ver 7 beta client to control both from 1 interface, or are people still seeing better results from the 6.34 console?

for gpu folding, you will definitely get a ppd increase from v7. i would recommend making the switch.

Thanks for the info!

Now i just gotta wait for the current WU's to finish, unless the new client will continue where the old one left off?

Well I've switched over to v7 and so far so good. My work box with the 5870 is pushing a lot more then i thought, more than home atm.

I'm a little worried about the temps at home though, i think I'll run GPU only until i can get the new case and HS I've been looking at.

Either way by adding the GPUs i think I've mostly made up for the loss of the 2600k that i had running SMP 4. Hopefully i can bring that back otherwise Bleeder is gonna beat me ;)

Thanks for the advice Ryo!

I use SMP7 which sometimes I need to switch to 6 or up to 8 when I get a weird WU requiring even cores however that has happened once in 6 months. The CPU requirement for the AMD side is exactly the same as 1 SMP which means you can get the most out your system or that's how its working for me.
The best difference I got was using client-type = advanced which I wasnt before which appears to be giving an extra WU, or about 1800PPD, through the GPU than previously.
I'm guessing you probably knew all that anyway but hey ho :)

Indeed thank you for the tips. I've stopped running the CPU part at home because i'm concerned about the heat. Something i can't fix right away yet.

However here at work temps with both running are quite acceptable. I had read about certain WU's not finishing properly running an odd number of cores which is why i was starting out with 6. Perhaps i'll knock it up to 7 before i leave for the night and see what happens.

It fails to start the unit or that's what happened to me and sits there saying FAILED. Once changed to an even number and restarting v7 it worked fine. It doesn't stop the GPU though.
