Storage Access - Hurting Framerates

I've been dealing with an issue now for a while where the framerate tanks when games are accessing the storage drive for loading assets, levels, or map areas.

I see it a lot in cut scenes, since newer games use these to mask load times. Also during open world games as you run around and it loads the new area. You see this as skipping/stuttering/slowdown as the framerate tanks from say 70fps down to 35fps. It's so annoying, and it happens in a LOT of games.

The rig is using a Z390 Aorus Master, 9900k, 32GB DDR3 3200, 3080 FTW3, and a 970 EVO m.2 for games and I think a 960 Pro SSD for OS.

I've tried updating firmware, drivers, and looked in the manual to see which slot the m.2 should be in to avoid sharing resources or slowing it down. It's currently in the middle slot, just under the GPU. I've used Hardware Monitor and the built in Windows tool to watch hard drive access and CPU...but don't notice anything crazy like either of them are ever really being taxed or worked hard.

Not sure where else to go with this. Any ideas?

PS: I want to say this also started when I got the 3080, but I won't commit to that. I THINK, that's when it started though.

Have you updated the graphics drivers lately? Might want to look into a DDU and then a clean install. Sounds like it might have something to do with loading textures into the memory on the video card. If that is the case a fresh install might help.

Fresh install of Windows. I know it sounds crazy, but it just fixed someone elses issues a day or two ago in another thread.

I would go with a fresh install of windows as well, I have a load of spinner drives still in my computer and other than slower load times I don’t have this issue. While your at it load up windows 11!:bleh:

Were they having the same issue? Framerate issues and skipping/stuttering while loading game assets (in game and cut scenes)?

I'll do a fresh OS install if they were, but will likely wait a bit.

Yes. Big framerate dips.

You could probably try a BIOS update and reset to optimised defaults first, before you go nuclear.

OK, thanks.

I'll do an OS install when I'm not feeling lazy and have the time to do it. :D

Yeah it's probably what i need to do as well although wouldn't a win 11 upgrade actually do the same thing as a fresh install?

No, upgrade doesn't. You could upgrade and then do the "windows refresh" within Windows.

I always recommend using the Media Creation Tool and creating a Win11 install and doing it fresh with a reformat of the drive.

I have way too many things installed and i do not feel like reinstalling any of it which is my main issue

I don’t think you have anywhere near what I had! Only ended up downloading 4tb when I did a fresh windows 11 install!:bleh:
