"ships on"...?

dumb question:

when a website (say ebgames.com) refers to a product that "ships on" a specific date, what exactly does "ships on" mean? Does it mean that the product leaves the manufacturers warehouse on this date or does it mean that retail outlettes will be releasing this product for sale on said date?

I always thought of it as of the date on which a product is shipped out to you(customer).

I might be wrong though.

Of course it is the date shipped to customer. Why would they post "This is the date that our supplier should ship this product to us".

It's the date that it ships from them to you.
However, if the product is delayed for any reason, they may not change it on the website in time.

I don't think dates are always the same when comparing web stores to B&M ones.
