Nice to see that y'all are still Folding! :)

Crawdaddy79 Aug 11, 2020 09:48 AM

There has been a slight uptick in active users. 37 from 32 over the last two weeks.

We peaked at 65, but doing much better than pre-COVID @ 20 - 25.

Average member is posting over 550k PPD. :) Jima13 is crushing it.

jima13 Aug 11, 2020 03:45 PM

It's nice when all my systems are working like they should, although my 2080ti still acts weird at times....like going from 150k ppd to 1.3 mil ppd to 2.6 mil ppd...I kinda gave up checking it :D

Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy! :fold:

Crawdaddy79 Aug 11, 2020 06:27 PM

That is almost definitely due to the Moonshot COVID project. Right now they're showing up as 13421. They typically run 1/3 as high PPD on high end video cards, but on lower end they are almost 50% higher PPD. Some have run as low as 1/6 as for me. Vega 64 folding at 52 watts. Get 13420, and back to normal. Haven't seen 13421 in a couple days.

Crawdaddy79 Aug 21, 2020 09:18 PM

It was a tough battle, Honsy. The fact that you didn't know you were fighting it is irrelevant. I won. Turning my laptop off tomorrow.

Gregor976 Aug 24, 2020 01:02 PM

Nice PPD jump, Crawdaddy!

What all are you folding with now? I've had this 1070 since early 2016. Next gen cards can't come soon enough... I've had a death grip on my wallet wrt gaming since the crypto craze. Prices -still- seem artificially inflated/fixed, to me. Hopefully next gen competition will at least ease my perception, if not the actual prices. lol

I ended up giving up on the Vega 64 and got a 5700XT. I RMA'd the Vega a 2nd time and it's been in repair for a week. Not sure what I'll do with it when it gets back, assuming it's fixed.

But the new card is a beast. Micro Center had the Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT for $435. When I asked about it the guy said the bigger version was quieter because the cooling solution was much more efficient, and the only reason not to get it was if you didn't have enough case space. Arrogantly I thought I had plenty of room for any card. Nope. This one was a full inch+ more beastier than the Vega 64. It forced me to route my motherboard cable correctly.

Just running it with default settings out of the box. Not a single crash in two weeks.

Ally Aug 26, 2020 02:26 AM

Nice,

I will be looking for a new card as well as my RX470 just died.

Was folding and playing a game when the PC just died and would not restart.
It restarted fine once I removed the RX470 card though.

Bummer.

Crawdaddy79 Aug 26, 2020 07:53 PM

That sucks man... I've lost hardware to folding in the past. A power supply and a CPU (but the CPU was my fault for trying to increase PPD :bleh: ). Many say that folding just exposes existing issues, but I don't necessarily agree.

It's pure bliss being able to fold and not worry about crashes. I genuinely thought the occasional crash was just the nature of [email protected], and that everybody encountered them. Mine just were more frequent.

No - FlyorDie pegged it.

Something must be wrong with your GPU. My V64 runs that unit just fine.

Anyway, if you have the case space for it, the Nitro+ is the quietest card I've had for as long as I can remember. It pulls about 180W (GPU) and gets 1.5M PPD with non 13421 WUs (gets about 600k PPD with the 13421's, @ 70W). Temp stays at 75C and fan RPM never breaks 3 digits. When it's idling, the fans don't even spin.

I think getting bigger than reference, specialized cooled GPUs is going to be my MO from here on out.

Ally Sep 7, 2020 09:32 AM

Picked up a GTX 1660 Super on a good deal on Ebay.

Avg 825k PPD

770k PPD on most units, with p13422 getting about 970k PPD

Pulling about 100W according to GPU-Z

Eesh.. well.. I'm back in it. New RAM and much needed cooling loop maintenance and its running far better. lol. 1.5-1.6m ppd according to how its reading right now. CPU will be joining the fray once I get my new fans in. -_-

I have plenty of case space. lol. and PCIe slots.

YES ITS DUSTY! Gonna clean it up this weekend. Just wanted to get the dang thing back together after rebuilding the cooling loop. Works A LOT better now. Especially now that I got a fill port and a drain port.

I think kj mentioned that card a while back. Seems to do a good job for the price; was just hoping you'd lean away from the dark side. :)

lol that is one nasty looking case. I've never been one for aesthetics but as I said this new card forced me to change my ways.

Comparison of two cards lined up.

The situation that made me take everything apart and route my cables correctly.

Final result.

With this, to the right I had to remove a HD bay. Luckily it wasn't being used and was easy to remove. There was a fan in front of the PSU that I moved up to blow directly onto the card and also help push air in the correct direction through the case.

The before pic after unplugging cables, preparing to remove Vega. The HDD bay can be seen to the right. clicky.

New points record for me on a single WU. (346k)

Code:

17:28:49:WU02:FS01:Sending unit results: id:02 state:SEND error:NO_ERROR project:13437 run:148 clone:4 gen:3 core:0x22 unit:0x0000000512bc7d9a5f5e324478af76ec

17:28:49:WU01:FS01:Starting17:28:51:WU02:FS01:Upload complete
17:28:51:WU02:FS01:Server responded WORK_ACK (400)
17:28:51:WU02:FS01:Final credit estimate, 346409.00 points
17:28:51:WU02:FS01:Cleaning up

One thing that kind of sucks since getting the 5700XT is the variety of work units has slimmed down to basically three or four projects; I suspect Navi is being filtered more than Vega which seemed to get ten or more. This was my first 13437 WU.

Finally broke the 40 mill goal. Now on to 50. Figured I will keep this running while the hydro discount is on. But that ends soon. :(

This is great! Congrats! Every bit helps!
I had to stop myself :(
Hopefully I'll get a decent folding rig going again one day.

Well done. I'm in the same boat - I broke 100M, but with electricity getting more expensive I have to slow it down.

Nice one. :)

Flyordie Nov 15, 2020 01:20 AM

My D5 pump died. -_- Thankfully it died WHILE I was at the PC.. although my PC would have shut off once the CPU hit 70C tDie. But will be off and on for the next 2-3 weeks as I lay the prepwork for going to hard tubing. Moving to a 120mm rad with push/pull fans, moving the pump to the top of the loop so I don't have to 100% remove ALL the air from the system... it sucks. lol.

Crawdaddy79 Nov 15, 2020 01:49 PM

The 1.5M PPD work units I used to get are now non-existent. For the last month or so, getting a mix of 900k and 1.2M PPD work units. I just keep waiting for winter to show up so that my warm basement can be welcome.

Admittedly, as much as I wish my Vega 64 were stable and I didn't have to return it, the heat that thing put out was an order of magnitude higher than the 5700XT. I suspect the only reason my basement were bearable in the past was because it kept crashing.

Loser-P has woken from being dormant and picked up the folding habit, roughly two days before I was to overtake. :hmm: That is adding another 2.5M PPD to our stats, and helped us tough 33M points in one day (yesterday) as a team - the highest I've seen.

Its here for us for the most part. Its not 85-100F anymore. lol

I can relate. My room heats up fast with mine while gaming/folding. But in the winter, it helps heat my home so doesn't bother me.

Yea. Seen that. Glad he's back in the fold though.

Loser-P Nov 16, 2020 11:09 AM

People are talking about me :runaway:

Yup sorry I only fold when it's cold, and mostly when I'm not at home using my computer.

Kinda ridiculous how much of a boost the new cuda support has given. I'm getting around 3.5 mil points on weekdays when I fold for about 18 hours a day.
I was getting around 1.5 mil before.

Crawdaddy79 Nov 22, 2020 09:08 AM

One of my case fan bearings has gone bad. It's spinning at about 30 RPM right now. Loud AF. Don't have time to go to Micro Center before going out of town on Tuesday... Looks like I'm going to be shut down until I get back. Might fold from my laptop while I'm gone, but it won't be significant numbers.

Probably time to get an entirely new case. Take the opportunity to de-dust everything as I haven't opened this thing since August.

Flyordie Nov 22, 2020 09:04 PM

Seems like a lot are dying lately. lol. My 120AFs are now dying. Ordered 2 Noctua NF-12 3000 iPPC PWM fans to get my radiator fed with air. Will eventually get a 3x kit of ML120s maybe and run those on the front and use one NF12 for pull and one for intake at the top.

Jimby Dec 4, 2020 01:16 PM

Surprisingly I was able to procure a RTX 3060 Ti, though not the model I wanted, but beggars can't be choosers. I'm interested to see how well folding works on it compared to the 1070 I was using. Hope everyone is well.

Crawdaddy79 Dec 25, 2020 11:53 AM

Really thought I'd be folding with Big Navi by now.

Just picked up a 1.5M PPD WU for the first time since early October (I think). I need it as my average has been tanking below 1M for no obvious reason.

Jimby Dec 25, 2020 04:36 PM

So far, the 3060 Ti is a beast in folding. I can only imagine what a 3080 or 3090 does. Says 2.3M PPD. Wow. Oh and merry Christmas chaps.

What's helpful is they've made CUDA optimizations a couple of months ago, allowing nvidia cards +50% folding performance. My laptop GPU went from 400k to 600k PPD, but I don't run it that often due to the fact that it hits 95C and stays there.

For sure. I’ve seen my 1660 Super go from ~800k PPD to 1.4M on some WUs.

Jimby Jan 10, 2021 07:53 PM

Hit the 100 mil point milestone today. Woot! Might have to give the CPU and the GPU a bit of a break soon. That kind of hardware is not easy to replace these days.

Jimby Jan 27, 2021 11:04 AM

I think Rage3D just went up in Rank today. Nice for a change. :)
