Thermal Pastes...

Any recommendations on thermal paste? Has anything really changed? I'm leaning towards the old standards of ArcticSilver 5 or ArcticCooling MX-4. But been awhile since I really looked at some of the stuff thats cropped up over the years.

In my case, it's going to be applied to an i7-4770k with my Hyper 212.

I have used the two you mentioned and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. I like the Kryonaut over the two as I think it lowers temps by an additional 2-3 C. Maybe placebo? What do I know.

MX-4 is the bees vagina.

No reason to touch AS5 these days :nope:

EVGA KPx is the best paste I've used. Kryonaut dries out too quickly imo and some batches are extremely stupid to spread. I swapped to EVGA KPx and it's by far the best I've put on a CPU (when I had an IHS on it). I intend to eventually do my GPU when I'm bored enough to take it apart.

AS5 is just so old and truly does get outperformed these days. MX-4 is better but again, outperformed and old.

Arctic has mx-5 out now. Havent seen any reviews but I read it lasts longer...

https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-MX-5-C...ct_top?ie=UTF8

Spec wise its has some improvements vs mx4:

Specific Gravity 3.25 g/cm³ 2.50 g/cm³

Volume Resistivity 1.9 X 10^13 Ω-cm 3.8 X 10^13 Ω-cm

Viscosity 550 Poise 870 Poise

They also have an mx-2 that has diff values as well:

Another vote for mx-4

I generally use Kryonaut. It seems to work well, but the thickness of it is annoying. I gave up on trying to spread it on the CPU and just use an X pattern and the heatsink pressure to spread it out.

Anyone using Noctua NT-H1? Seeing lots of people mentioning it as I continue down my research rabbit hole.

I've been using NT-H1 for a good few years and it seems fine. Although I have not compared it to anything else for a while so might be better options. One good thing is it doesn't seem to ever dry out. When I took the heatsink off my 2600K after years it was still the same consistency and wiped right off easily with iso alcohol.

I switched to NT-H1 from using ArcticSilver 5 years ago on a 2600K and I remember it had 1-2C improvement. Still using it now on a 3700X stock with NH-U14S and it idles at 32C (60% fan speed) and highest load temp I've ever seen is 63C.

Well the NT-H1 won out because I could get it cheapest and fastest :D

*late edit*
Also pretty hilarious how crazy close almost all of these are. MX-4, MX-5, NT-H1, NT-H2, EVGA KPx, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut etc etc are all about + or - 1 degree or so till you get into rather extreme OC's.

I went with Thermal Grizzly on my GPU block. It was a lot better than the stuff that EK sent with the water block.

Liked it so much that I put it in the CPU block a few weeks later.

Yeah grizzly is tight. I am thinking about ordering the MX5 to see wtf the fuss is about.
