Does an FPS limiter just cap the max fps, so a person can run vsync off with FPS cap and hopefully experience less tearing (from situations where the engine renders more frames than the display's refresh)? Never really used one before other than fps_max in Source games.

I get tearing when I cap my fps at 59 in skyrim on a 120hz monitor, so this frame rate cap can only be used with vsync turned on.

what exactly did the latest driver fix in bf3, I'm getting worse performance, drops into the 50's, before it was stuck @ 60 no matter how many tankes were blowing **** up, now when there is smoke i get drops to 50's same settings as before 1600p ultra no aa

I've been having serious performance issues as well lately, haven't played in months, when it first was released the game ran awesome on my setup. Now I get drops to the low teens sometimes single digit FPS and it takes time to recover. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the latest patch + drivers. Hell even going Tri-SLI hasn't fixed it.

Yes less tearing and smoother gameplay. On both 60 & 120hz displays, a setting of 125 should provide excellent results if you can maintain that frame rate. If not, when using 60hz either 62 or 66 should be ok, but you will notice a regaulr tearing pattern, although not as bad as without it plus gameplay will be far smoother.

Ideally you want 250, 125, 66 or 62. Whichever you can achieve a solid constant of.

As for BF3, it runs at 125 solid for me, and so f'ing smooth its a joke. Seriously it is as smooth as CSS or CoD4 capped to 125.

So your config then is NV drivers @ fps limiter 125, vsync off in game/drivers and a 120hz display? Interesting to know, and it sounds awesome.

Tearing in BF3 is not really an issue for me somehow, I suspect because the game is not often rendering past 60fps (I have a 60hz display), I play with 1920x1200 everything high, AA off, vsync off and average probably 35-40fps.

Definitely interested in a 120hz display down the road, hopefully IPS 120hz becomes a reality.

No, he is using a console command in bf3.

Yeh thats right except the fps limiter isnt in Nv drivers yet so am using a console command as mangler pointed out.

Theres really no need for it in single player games and would rather more eyecandy or 3D at 60fps vsync, but for online gaming its the way to go imo.

The fps limiter is in the drivers, but unlike the built in frame limiter that some games have, it produces tearing if you use it without vsync enabled.

Yeh in the betas right? and you use nhancer?

And I dont believe it about tearing, it should be exactly the same. What happens if you set to 125? If you set it to 60 @ 60hz you will get tearing.

I did some more extensive testing, and you are right, it's more or less the same.

It's a shame that 60fps @ 120hz results in tearing without vsync though, since skyrim does have more input lag with vsync enabled than it has with it disabled.

But it's a singleplayer game so it does not really matter, the 60fps cap is more important to me in order to avoid the physics bug.

Try 66, 62, or even 90. (or is anything over 60 no good in Skyrim??)

Noticed something new when first opening the 295.51 control panel after install:

It actually shows the numbers of gpus and types of gpus installed on your system. Pretty cool addition.

SIrPauly Jan 31, 2012 05:24 PM

Made a silly mistake and thought there were GK devices in the new drivers, sorry, for being an idiot!:(

Dungeoncrawler Jan 31, 2012 05:43 PM

I'm sitting on a black screen after install and repost.

update - whew, started after second repost. Also, these drivers have dramatically reduced my gpu utilization. I'm now getting a scale of 65-70% instead of 85-90%. The latter was causing my gpu's to run rather hot.

GanjaStar Feb 2, 2012 12:58 AM

these are the ofirst nvidia drivers in a long time that gave me issues. and the issues are confirmed by many poeple across the net.

Alice Madness will crash with phsyx on when you load a save game, Super monday night combat will not start at all.

both of these are fixed by going back to 290.53

Mangler Feb 2, 2012 06:16 AM

I wonder if simply downgrading the physx software would fix the alice issues.

Dungeoncrawler Feb 5, 2012 12:49 AM

The 295 drivers under desktop size and position, the perform scaling on gpu should it be set to override the scaling mode set by games and programs?

It's good to see some love and attention for our dated hardware, hehe!:)

SMAA injector takes a rather large performance hit with these drivers in BF3, even though FXAA is disabled.

FINALLY! The performance issue I was having is skyrim was driving me crazy. Hopefully this will fix it and I can go back to normal vsync.

edit - damn, I still get the dramatic drop in performance. Maybe I need to do a fresh install of my OS?
