Thinking about building a second rig again

So I bought a Palit 3070 today for 1072 bucks to mine. Adding both cards to my rig increased the earning but brings down the hash rate from about 150 that it should be to 110 that it is. After research it is because AMD has shitty PCIe lanes.

Now I am thinking of quickly throwing a rig together and am left with 2 choices.

1) Intel 10600K w/ Z490 motherboard
2) AMD 3600 w/ X570 motherboard

I tried looking at Z460 and B550 boards but price difference is like 30 bucks each. That is like a trip to a pizza place here so I don’t care about downgrading the motherboard.

Options I have narrowed down are:
Asrock Z490 Phantom
Or
ASUS X570 PLUS wifi

Both are solid choices. All benches show 3600 to be 6-8% slower at 1440P. However there is a cost difference. I need to decide this weekend as there is a sale on the egg.

What do you guys think? I really should’ve picked up the second rig with a 5600X when I had the chance. Totally bummed out that I didn’t do that.

Nunz Feb 13, 2021 10:49 AM

You paid $1k for a ****ing 3070.

HAHAHAHAHA

acroig Feb 13, 2021 10:52 AM

😆 @ nunz.

Will the be a mining rig? Gaming rig for son? Both?

KAC Feb 13, 2021 10:53 AM

Both.

Evileh Feb 13, 2021 11:23 AM

I take charitable donations in form of paypal thanks.

How much more is Intel option.

KAC Feb 13, 2021 12:48 PM

About $100.

In mining all that counts is the GPU, no? As a gaming rig the AMD option would do quite well so unless you want to buy the Intel CPU to see what it can do (or to replace your current rig) then save the money and go AMD.

demo Feb 13, 2021 05:15 PM

If you're looking at 10600k or 3600, I'll sell you an 8700k and z370 maximus X hero if interested.

Nagorak Feb 13, 2021 05:59 PM

I thought you were unhappy with your AMD setup? Why not wait until 11000 series releases and just put something together then? You're probably going to anyway, so getting a second rig up and running right now seems kind of silly to me.

That would be awesome. PM incoming.

I am not unhappy with my AMD setup at all. On the contrary after spending some time with it I am pretty happy with it.

AMD has an advantage that it comes with a air cooler and it is cheaper. However 3600 is relatively quite slower than a 10600K. I have seen many benches to confirm this. 10600K had a fat price tag but now it is on sale for 229 which bring is quite close to AMD that is 199. However will still require me to buy a 70$ Air cooler or AIO. Hence the $100 difference.

If deal with demo works out that might be the cheapest option.

Nagorak Feb 14, 2021 03:46 PM

At the current prices I'd definitely go 10600K over 3600. Middle of last year when the 3600 was down to around $160 and the 10600K was high $200s it was a different story.

I guess having the halo CPU really makes a big difference in perception because a lot of people seem to be overpaying for lesser AMD processors now. (To be clear the 3600 is not bad by any means, just not a good price vs the alternatives.)

Hope it does

KAC Feb 14, 2021 06:49 PM

So I have narrowed down to either

demo deal which is 8700K w/ Maximus board - 400
Or 3600 with ASUS Strix F B550 board - 400
Or 5600X with ASUS Strix F B550 board - 575

Torn between spending the extra 175 for a 5600X

Rest of the parts are el cheapo:
Deepcool mesh case
Deepcool 750w gold psu
Crucial P2 1 TB
Team group 3600 C18 ram

What do you gays think?

demo Feb 14, 2021 07:03 PM

And h100

acroig Feb 14, 2021 07:45 PM

Choice B only because same price for new parts. I'm sure shipping for choice A is expensive otherwise I'd go that route.

Nagorak Feb 14, 2021 07:47 PM

Realistically the difference in performance between the 8700K and 5600X will be pretty negligible in gaming. 5600X or 3600 has the better upgrade path, which might matter a few years down the road (although the 8700K can still be upgrade to a 9900K).

8700K system is probably the best deal. 3600 only if you want an economic build now while keeping a strong upgrade path. 5600X is honestly kind of pricey for the amount of extra performance you get, but if you're going to have remorse not getting it then it may be the only choice.

KAC Feb 14, 2021 10:48 PM

Oh I know exactly about the difference between 8700K and 5600X :bleh:
That board is also top tier and it comes w/ an H100 as demo said (prices are shipped for all parts). Whereas, the 3600 and 5600X will need to run on their own AMD wraith coolers.

This is supposed to be handed over to my son in Summer once he is done with his exams. Until then the build will just mine coin and hopefully pay for at least the graphics card by itself. Total system cost w/ 5600X is about $2100. With the other options it is about $1925. I am just wondering if it is worth indulging.

I also remember selling my 8086K, TUF board and 32 GB of DDR4 3600 for 435. So what demo is asking is pretty reasonable. The real pinch is that I had an option to buy the exact same 5600X build for 1800 boners (w/ a 240 Lian Li AIO) 2 weeks or so ago which I decided not to do.

Today I try my 2 ft riser cable and if that setup works then I may scrap the build. If it doesn't then will indulge in a new putter.

demo Feb 14, 2021 11:26 PM

Not too fussed either way, was going to use it for a dedicated VR machine in my spare room but I can put the 10700k on VR duty when I upgrade shortly.

On another note, after noticing how high 2nd hand GPU's are going for, I sold 2080Ti for $1000 AUD on the weekend. :D Payed $1350 for it 2 years ago.

KAC Feb 15, 2021 12:05 AM

But demo what would you have done?

demo Feb 15, 2021 01:31 AM

8700k with maximus mobo and H100 ;)

Can always get a 9900k later too

nice selling of the 2080ti at 780 US dollars :) ... Jackpot

You sold 3070 and buying a 3070 ?

The board VRM is questionable? Are you sure it handles a 10700 ? We will find out the hard way ... Keep posting ...I am curious.

KAC Feb 15, 2021 01:24 PM

Everything is questionable except the 3070. However, since there is nothing to overclock it is operating just fine. Put it up for mining. Kid is excited but he won’t have access until he clears his exams and demonstrates great grades.

Not bad.

KAC Feb 15, 2021 01:36 PM

Compared to my previous options. It actually benches pretty decent on CPU Z. It did about 5500 MC and 550 SC score without me doing anything. Delta between this and my 5600X is that 5600X benches 6000 MC and 650 SC.

Only thing is that it is not the K model so is limited to 4.8 SC boost and hits only 4.65 MC boost on its own. But given the board is a shitty 460 chipset I had already considered the board to be a throwaway item.

For me I paid only 340 extra for the 6 items that I was looking at paying upwards of 800-975 bucks. Board, processor, hard disk, ram, psu and case were costing me that much money. This way I gained 2 extra cores, half tb extra disk space and lost 3600->3200 ram and some overclocking capability. Everything else is a wash. Saving 500 bucks in the process was more important to me.

I am going to use that to try and buy a 3090 :bleh:

Leprechaun Feb 15, 2021 06:54 PM

I didn't get here in time. Just make sure the psu is good quality. I had some no name 750W chinese psu sitting around. Used it to mine a single 3080. Once a day the system would shut itself down. Kept thinking I messed the video card up. I replaced the psu with a 10yr warranty Seasonic 1000W. Card has been mining for a month straight now without issue. PSU is overkill for it, but it's all I had.

Just a heads up if your psu says "Me love you long time Shingshengzhao inc." and you have system problems, look at the psu first.
