Arrow Discord is looking for buyers: Microsoft is looking

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

Quote:
Microsoft is in talks to buy messaging platform Discord for more than $10 billion, Bloomberg News reported.
Discord has reached out to potential buyers and Microsoft is one of them, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter, while one of them said it was more likely to go public than sell itself.

From a historical standpoint, this would be terrible. We all remember what happened to skype after Microshaft bought them...

Discord is actively looking for buyers, although some insiders said it's likely they'll go public instead. I put this in OT..should have posted it here....

If their management is closer to how Xbox has been treating the newly bought game studios, probably has a chance to be decent (though I don't know why Discord is trying to be bough), but the potential of forced integration and the history of chat programs dying certainly paints a bleak picture.

It's honestly insane to me how much these companies are willing to pay for something like Discord. I mean 12 billion? Maybe it's worth it on some level, just seems nuts to me.

1. Buy Discord, get 250 million user accounts
2. Force migration to Microsoft/Facebook/Google/Amazon account to continue using Discord
3. Sell online services/advertising to your 250 million new users - make way more than $12 billion

But the owners could certainly just take a position on an executive board and check out. With a business as big as theirs, there would be less senior level executives that could take over if the top brass want out. I'm sure there are benefits to it, but it doesn't seem like a particular advantage in my eyes. Doubt it's great for the rank-and-file, even if a bigger parent company could keep things more stable, they're also liable to slash and burn if stuff goes south.

There's tons of discords with questionable content on them, everything from porn to piracy, a buyout will probably end up killing those communities and driving them to other software.

It's because they have no choice, as they were never profitable, they rely on investments from venture capitalists and alike to stay afloat. Their attempts at creating income (such as a digital game store) either failed or had minimal effect (such as server boosts).

The one thing they do have is the hundreds of millions of active users (and all the profile data that comes with it), that is insanely valuable to other companies who use profiling and targeted advertisements. Investments won't last forever, they reached the point where they had to either (1) go public or (2) sell to the highest bidder.

Fair enough. I know they were trying to push their paid subscription servers and figured they had enough income from that/sponsor deals/integration/etc. - you wouldn't think you'd need a huge team or a gigantic amount of resources (at least per user, I know you need some servers for the numbers they see) for the service, so the overhead wouldn't be too crippling.

These two things here are what makes me question it. Discord itself could never make money off its users, but Microsoft can? Sure you can make an argument with advertising, but how many users are just driven away by it? Getting a bunch of users for a free service is one thing, but what happens when you want them to pay (whether directly or through ads). The bottom line is $12 billion is a lot of money for a service that can't make money.

And this is the point where someone points out the "high paid analysts" who say it's a good deal. But those are the same analysts who thought Microsoft buying Nokia was a good idea, and that ended up flushing $7 billion down the drain.

Maybe this is actually a worthwhile acquisition, but based on Microsoft's recent track record I'll remain skeptical. Actually the track record of large company acquisitions in general suggests one should be skeptical. The buyer almost always overpays and the rosy projections that are supposed to justify the purchase price often don't come true.

There comes a time where you wonder how long it will keep going. Just because you have a popular offering today doesn't mean that it'll still be valuable in 5 years. The tech world is harsh... upstarts can kill you quickly if they become trendy, or people just get tired of your stuff and move on.

Cashing out today gets you the value. Holding onto a stake means that you're gambling that the future is bright. At a certain point it's tempting to walk away from the table with winnings in hand and let someone else worry about the future.

This article answers most of your questions
Why Microsoft wants Discord

It's not completely about making money, but about being a 'force multiplier'. For example, the IT dept in most companies don't directly make money for the company, but by providing tech support to the departments that do, they effectively multiply their effectiveness.

Every Business Needs Force Multipliers To Survive (forbes)
"if you are only reaching one customer at a time, one market or one partnership at a time, you’re not going to grow fast enough to be competitive, especially against the larger players that have a full infrastructure in the marketplace. These force multipliers allow you to scale up rapidly, and reach opportunities you could not support any other way."(full article)

Good news. M$ ruins companies when they buy them and to be honest, I'm surprised Discord didn't go for teh monyz.

Unless they see more money going a different direction...

They didn't "go with" Sony. Discord decided to stay independent and this partnership with Sony was likely in the works before they started exploring a buyout. It's a minority investment from Sony with no controlling stake in the company. FYI Microsoft already has an existing partnership with Discord as well.
