![]() I let my self get talked in to a Nvidia 5800 Ultra and boy what a mess! I installed it and I have tried it with Battlefield 1942, Delta Force Black Hawk Down, UT2003, and Unreal2, and all are virtually unplayable now? I get a massive amount of artifacts in the game like huge pillars stretching across the map or going straight up in to the sky. I get bizarre long jagged spikes coming out of what ever weapon I am holding, I get huge sections of blank areas on some maps. There are so many artifacts and anomalies in these games I can't hardly see to move around and makes them unplayable. I did not plunk down my hard earned money and had a long wait for a big mess. I don’t know if its driver related or if I received a bad card either way I am screwed because I can't play. I tried it in the system I was going to put my 9700Pro in and got the same bad results. Oh damn and the noise it makes, it does sound like a freaking Hoover Vac and when the fan kicks into gear it make a high pitch squeel, very annoying. I sure hope they will let me return it so I can get the 9800 Pro!! Strange Anomilies and noise are not the only bad thing about the 5800 Ultra either; Before I removed it from my system and put my old card back in I ran some bench mark tests and it was about the same maybe a tad slower on some then my old GeForce 4600 and much slower than the ATI 9700 Pro. I used the Autobench program which auto runs several benchmarks like 3dmark SE, Quake3, Serious Sam SE, and others. Here are some results, note that due to apparent hardware problems with the 5800 Ultra these results might not be accurate: All at 1024x768 res on same system: Quake 3 9700Pro 353.7 fps 5800 Ultra 376.7 fps Serious Sam SE 9700 Pro 71.4 FPS 5800 Ultra 77.8 FPS 3Dmark SE 9700 Pro 11568 5800 Ultra 10873 UT 2003 9700 Pro flyby - 143.710186 botmatch - 48.622913 5800 Ultra 1024x768 flyby - 139.102844 botmatch - 48.075346 Vulpine GLmark 9700 Pro 61.6 fps 5800 Ultra 56.8 fps |

![]() Ugh...poor guy. How long have you had it? I'm sure you can return it for store credit at the very least, citing it doesn't work and that you'd prefer a 9800 Pro. However, optimally, you will simply get your money back.

They don't have WHQL drivers yet. I feel sorry for people who bought that thing based on reviews which used cheat drivers and "recommended" settings that made it seem competitive. |

![]() Did you try the 5800 Ultra on a fresh install of Windows? Those scores are ridiculously low, and you are having too many problems, even for a GeForceFX.

Also the 5800 Ultra had some minor 2d issues like some icons on the desktop, and in the control panel etc. were not being dislayed and the desktop was a tad blury. Anyway it's going back today and I am going to try and track down a 9800 pro. |

![]() A lot of new games do an auto-detect of your hardware on their first run, and set themselves up accordingly. Therefore, if you switch your graphics cards you should really reinstall those game before you play. Same thing goes for the OS really. Switching between ATI <-> nVidia, you should really reinstall a clean OS to get good results. I see what you are doing here, bashing nVidia in a place so so easy to get others bashing right along with you, but seriously the GF FX isn't quite as bad as you make it out to be.

![]() No its not bad at all, but it is noisy and my Zalman equipted 9700 pro is totally quiet. Did wonder if I could install a Zalman on my GF-FX, it would be a pretty good card then, the mem heatsinks would have to go though as they are way to big, so alternates would have to be found. Got me thinking now of a possible modding project. |

![]() Yeah the FX is inferior to the 9700 pro, but not THAT much. Even a blind tool knows better than to install drivers that dont even work correctly. Try the 43.45 and you should be fine. The FX isnt loud either, if you read tech websites you usually have much louder fans already in your case, so stop the griping. My cousin has a case fan thats 77db, now THAT is loud. |

![]() Ok- I picked up a BFG 5800 Ultra from Best Buy over the weekend. I was suprised they had 3 in stock. I have 2 computers and wanted to play with something new- I had some tax money to spend. My other machince has a 9700 pro in it. The Geforce fx is a very fast card. I installed it with the latest drivers from Nvidia's website. I had no problems at all with stabilty or games with the FX. I probably would have kept the card if it wasn't for the noise. I expected it to be loud, but not as loud as it was. I have 4- 80mm case fans in the machine I had the Geforce FX in, plus an Athlon XP with a louder fan on the heatsink. There is no way in hell case fans will cover up the noise from the FX. It is loud and high pitched. I had my computer on the floor which helped but I really couldn't stand it. My wife even asked what that noise was-which is unusual. The noise is not an exaggeration. Without doing any benchmarking, the 9700 and FX seemed equivalent to me in real world gaming speed. In the benchmarks I did do between the 2 cards, my 9700 pro was faster in almost all Direct 3d games, but the Geforce FX was faster in Opengl games. The NV30 would have been a fine card if it wasn't for the noise. That's just my 2 cents from someone who actually had a Geforce FX ultra.

![]() Well........Let me say I'm not really a fanboy when it comes to video cards. The 9800 is not radically different than the 9700. I like to play with new technology. If the 9800 256 offers more than just memory (if it is clocked higher and offers DDR-II) I will get the 9800 256. I really think I'm going to wait for the NV35 or possibly get a 5800 non-ultra. Like I said, I like playing with new hardware. The 9800 isn't really anything new over the 9700. Scott

![]() whats wrong with having a nice loud FX!! I would rather have one than any radeon for the following 2 reasons! 1. I can lay behind my computer in the summer and cool down. 2. My computer might be able to take off so I dont have to carry the damn thing anymore!
