Default Tale of Two Flagships

So I have been eagerly awaiting the October 15th announcement of the new Google Pixel 4/4 XL for months now. Yes I know there are only a handful of Pixel fanboys in here but I have been one since 2016 after switching from Samsung. I have always appreciated the clean, current installs of Android, fantastic camera and build quality.

I was in need of replacing both my current personal and work phones -- plan was to be 128GB 4XL for personal, and a 64GB 4 for work.

Fast forward to Tuesday last week -- my 4 XL arrives in the mail to replace my 2 XL. I had already read the negative reviews regarding battery life, lack of wide angle, gimmicky gestures, no more free full quality google cloud, etc etc -- none of the negativity really bothered or affected me. That said, a day into the using the phone it didn't seem that much different to my 2 XL -- sure the 90hz is nice and the new camera is great but all in all, not that different at all.

At the end of the day I decided to cancel my Pixel 4 order and try something else for my work phone. Read some reviews and headed down to my cellular provider to pick something. Gravitated to the Note 10+ immediately.

Beautiful giant display, super bright, 256GB, 12GB ram (vs 128GB & 6GB in my 4 XL), the pen, wide angle camera, etc. I think the only place where the Pixel wins here is Android 10, 90Hz screen and the camera is arguably better.

Paid for it and took it home.

I have had both phones for a few days now and I find myself wanting to use the Note more often than not when I reach for a phone.

I will post up more of a review in a few weeks.

I still think it's outrageous a phone requires more than 4GB of RAM. Saying this, my HTC 10 still seems to be ok until I start filling up the storage. Clearly some of that is used as swap space.

Also debating getting a Pixel 4 though. The on-board vocal recognition is really cool.

Note 5 was the last Samsung I waste my time/money on. Absolute garbage phone. No interest in the brand anymore.

I was same, last one I had was the Note 4. Interest aside the S10+ and Note 10+ are considered some of best phones for a reason.

It took me years to even consider looking at one again, now I am glad I did.

They burned me on many phones before that, learned my lesson. They're always considered the best phones, even the Note 5. Hype doesn't do it for me.

Weird, I had multiple Samsung's and my wife always has -- only issue i ever had was bloat. Aside from that never any problems.

How did they burn you?

Note 5 had terrible battery life.
My note 9? Love everything about it. Best phone I ever owned.
2 day battery, emulate every consolecup to the Wii, DeX, display, cameras, sd card, etc, just my perfect phone.

Never had an issue with Note phones over the last 8+ years of ownership.
Samsung phones have a reputation for being the best (or at least among the very best) because it's a well-earned one.

Sometimes it's just luck of the draw. My notes 2 and 4, as well as my daughters 2 S7s all died early deaths. I tried Apple for a bit, then a PH1, and now have a Note 8 I got for half off brand new.

It's nice, but the dedicated bixby button is troublesome. It won't be long before I move to a Pixel 3 XL or an S10+ depending on the deals I can find.

I'm sure you remember how anti-Apple I used to be.

The Note 5 was the gateway to Apple for me. It was terrible. 4hrs screen on time if I was lucky, and the issues with them were well known. I went from that POS to an iPhone 6s+, and held on to that iPhone for 2 full years before switching, a first for me. Every Samsung I ever had I couldn't wait to get rid of. Frankly don't care how far they've come, I suffered enough from their brand.

Surface Duo you say!
Hmmm, off to research this phone...

...That looks amazing

Although, it's strange to think that a Microsoft branded device is running a non-Windows OS.
Pleasantly surprised that Android is the OS of choice for the device, but part of me wants the full Windows experience -- doesn't seem to be an option here though.

It's a compromise. Android is a proven mobile platform. We have access to the app we know and love. It the best way for them to get their foot in the door again. I can see Microsoft implementing some of the dual-screen features from Windows 10X[Surface Neo].
I don't think M$ is giving up on a mobile OS. The Surface X is giving the full Windows on emulation. Maybe mobile processing power will get there.

Microsoft is getting the device out there early for developers. Hopefully, they'll make good software to take advantage of those dual-screen when it gets in our hands. Samsung note devices will finally have some competition.

You can disable or remap the Bixby button to do what what you want.

My Note 4 is still functioning fine even after it being in my pocket when I crashed the mountain bike, just ended up with a slightly bent frame. No issues with a Note 8 I've had since launch although I dislike the current designs with a super fragile build, curved edges and now no headphone jacks and these daft notch or punch hole designs.

I've had crappy luck with Samsungs. I had the Note 4, Note 8, and Note 9. All 3 gradually got slower after about a year, like some process was eating up CPU cycles. I cleared the partition cache, wiped/reset everything, etc. Finally gave up on Samsung and went back to the iPhone Xs Max. So far it's been a fantastic, trouble-free phone. I do miss the flexibility of Android, though.

Is it the updates that are causing it? I haven't noticed any slowdowns yet. I'm using Nougat.

I do miss the flexibility of Android, though.

It's typically the bloatware from the carriers that causes it...

The remap worked great for a while, but doesn't any more. I'm not sure if a certain update killed it or what, but bixby is all it will open now.

Note 5, and wifes S7 edge made me swear to never get another samsung aswell. Then I got the S8+ because it was practically free, and my Note 5 was aging. 2 years in, and honestly. It's been a fantastic phone. Still get a full day with heavy usage, end the night around 30%~. I don't game or anything crazy on it, it's just a browser / communication device but it's more than I need to even think about upgrading.

Did you upgrade to the one ui? Do you if it still has the spam phone powered by hiya? I used my boss's s8 which uses one UI but I didn't see the spam call option. I'm not sure if it's a carrier phone thing or it was removed after the update.

Must be a carrier thing, because I have zero idea what you are talking about.. I do have 9.0 installed so should be one UI, but never heard of hiya.

Did you read the link? The smart calls and places in the phone app is powered by hiya. what I'm asking, is the spam call option still available? or The s8 model don't have those features.

FWIW, there are other apps out there which can do that and will use a wider crowd source (since they won't be directly tied to a manufacturer or carrier).

It has them. Hiya had to be agreed to for their service during setup. All carriers except for Sprint I think, also offer free tools for dealing with spam/scam etc. T-mobiles requires a separate app being installed to do it, but it seems to work fairly well. Not much gets through on my personal cell any more.

Pixel 3 and 4 do not impress me. The 3 has a stupid frosted glass body that scuffs and scratches easily. The 4 deletes the fingerprint sensor and relies on (broken) face unlock. The radar gesture gimmick adds expense but isn't useful.
