Default 2016 MLB Season

Wow, the KC parade was only yesterday, but axes are already falling in the land of Blue October. The Royals announced they will not renew their end of the mutual options for either jGUTS (Jeremy Guthrie) or Alex Rios. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but these salaries could theoretically be renegotiated at a different, surely lower, price-point? (But also that this is practically never ever done and it's tantamount to release?)

Guthrie has to be close to retiring, so maybe this just made the decision for him. He was flat getting rocked in the end, the 5-8 run type of outings.

Rios is more the puzzler. He was hot the first week but had a tough time rebounding from a ~ 2 month broken hand injury and didn't really strongly contribute until late in the year. He's a horrible fielder, but even that improved at the end. So there's that, plus the Royals don't have anyone any better at right field, nor is there any guarantee that they'll retain Alex Gorden in left. The Royals' outfield could grow thin in a hurry.

I'm also wondering if Johnny Gomes' sensational speech at the parade bought him a few days' reprieve from the same ax.

I would like Gordon and Zobrist to stay on. Hmmm...

Zobrist is a versatile defender and a switch-hitter with a high walk rate.[2] As a defender he has played roughly half his innings at second base, but has also spent significant time at shortstop and in right field.[3] Zobrist has been referred to as a "super utility player".[4][5]

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Zobrist

Rios can go.

Mets have a lot of interesting decisions to make.

Bullpen, Murphy replacement and Cespedes replacement.

@jzl the royals have quite a few guys that are ufa and going to get considerable raises. Not quite sure what your team payroll is going to be. Rios earned 9.5mil last year I think. Money much better spent towards resigning Gordon or zobrist. What are you thoughts on retaining guys like madson, young, and morales?

First, let me post a couple handy links . . .

Contract Info

MLB Hot Stove

With these pitchers, you have a current microcosm of what the Royals will have with the core position players in a couple years, in that they're going to have to make a basic decision about what type of team they want. I think they already decided they don't want a shitty team any more, the next choice is whether they want to try to go for some sort of dynastic/historic type of team or a team something like 2013-2014 that's good and fun, but not really a powerhouse.

They get relief from the fact that the better the team is, the more revenue it makes, but probably at some point the owners, the Glass family, will have to dip into their own till if they want to go for the gusto.

If I were them I'd try to keep Franklin Morales because of his prime age. Young and Madsen are relatively old. At $850K Madsen was a steal this year. They won't get him for anything close to that. So he's probably gone, too, but they may decide to spend some money on him, esp. since Holland won't be back anytime soon.

To me this conundrum also points out the downside of the Cueto trade. Finnegan and Lamb and whoever aren't around to step up and fill the roles of these pitchers. (I do have hopes for Miguel Almonte and Brian Flynn among the Royals young pitching prospects) I still wonder if it was worth losing these guys to get Cueto to win a couple key playoff games that frankly, he could have just as easily lost.

I found an even more rarefied club than the 10-RBI-in-Single-Game Club. This is the 20-20-20 Club-- players who've hit 20 homers, doubles, and triples all in one year.

There are only seven players, going back to 1911. Willie Mays and George Brett are notable members.

It must be pretty hard to hit 20 triples in a year, let alone the other two. You'd need both power and legs, and both Brett and Mays had that.

Jeebus, to the Red Sox for a seven year, $217 mil deal (31M/yr) That's retarded; plus he and Ortiz hate each other.

The Royals non-tendered Greg Holland, so he's a free agent, but this hopefully is a move to defer his salary until he returns from his Tommy John surgery in 2017.

Johnny Cueto will probably end up in Arizona, and in my opinion, he'll be vastly overpaid. The rumors are that he'll land a 140-ish mil, six year deal. Ironically, Cueto's five-game ride into hurler hell started immediately after he publicly stated he'd like to be a Red Sox. (Red Sock?)

Ben Zobrist to the Cubs for $14m/year.

Ryan Madson to the A's for $7.3m/year.

Oh, Padawan, don't give in to the dark side. The Force is strong with this KC Jedi Dayton Moore.

That said, we can extend a $15.8mil qualifying offer to Alex Gordon who batted 7th or 8th most of the year, but we can't afford to dish $14mil to Zobrist, our #2 dude? For being the "face of the franchise," Gordon sure turned down that qualifying offer pretty damned quick, so sentimentality needs to left out in the lobby at this point. It's not like he's that much younger than Zobrist.

Whew. Alex Gordon signs for a four year, 72m (18m per) deal and returns to the Royals. He didn't get what he may've wanted (5/100) but he also says now he never seriously considered signing with any other team.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy we retained AG, good kid. Still annoyed about Zobrist, though. I really wanted him back. I was probably too needy...I've driven off a lot that way.

I assume GravY is happy that Justin Upton signed with the Tigers.

Upadate: Yoenis Cespedis re-signs with Mets w/ a $75m three-year deal. For that price, they can have him.

Fack!! Tickets on sale today . . .

Now the downside to winning the World Series-- every schmoe wants tickets now. The prices aren't bad, but all the good seats are scooped up at least til Mid-May. You can't even buy a 20-game package at Kaufmann for Dugout Box or, where I like to sit, Dugout Plaza.

Fack!!

Take what you would spend on the tickets, upgrade to a huge TV and sound and make sure you get all the game channels, add the smell of hot beer, pretzels, and decaying hot dogs to your living room, and off you go.

I can almost taste it.

Meanwhile, watch Yoenis Cespedis mis-play a ball by mis-interpreting the rules whilst allowing what would have been a double to become an inside the park home run:

http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/1149321...y=must%2Bc

And yes, this is the Met who booted Alcides Escobar's World Series lead-off hit 40 feet into left-center resulting in a much more important inside-the-parker.

Somehow he won a Gold Glove last year and Lorenzo Cain didn't.

With all due respect to cain he wasn't competing against cespedes for the gold glove. He was competing against kiermaier and pillar. Either of them deserved the gold glove imo.

Yes, I realize that they weren't directly competing. Nor do I have a problem with Kiermaier winning it. Cespedes didn't deserve it.

By the way, for any Mets fans-- I was wondering how bad, if any, was the grudge against KC. I figure Mets and Royals fans share a common disdain (to put it diplomatically) for the Yankees, going back several decades.

Sheesh, the battle royale between Davis and Cespedes at the top of the ninth (Royals v. Mets). That was intense. And what the heck happened to Soria? He almost blew it for the Royals.
