Default Radeon8500/Win98SE/Dual Monitor/Second Monitor Displays No Icons

When you install and setup a second monitor the screen is blank "just the back ground" and no Icons appear. I found this issue on a customers PC. Microsoft Tech net had this issue in it, so I'll just post Microsoft's document.

SYMPTOMS
When you restart your computer with multiple-display support enabled, your desktop icons may not appear on a secondary monitor.
Or, when you are using multiple monitors, your desktop icons may not be saved when you quit Windows.

WORKAROUND
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

This issue may be temporarily resolved by deleting the following registry key:
HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Old WorkAreas
This is not a permanent fix. It may happen again after a period of time and the registry key must be deleted each time the issue comes up.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Thumbs up Good work!

Thanks for posting that man! That problem has been driving me nuts ever since I went to two monitors! I came to the Rage3d forums tonight looking for a solution, and this works!

As the article points out, this isn't a permanent fix. I found I was having to look for and delete the key mentioned with almost every boot, so I wrote this little registry script:

--------------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Old WorkAreas]
"NoOfOldWorkAreas"=-
"OldWorkAreaRects"=-

[-HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Old WorkAreas]
--------------------------------------

The lines between (not including) the dashes are the file.

I named it "iconfix.reg" (the .reg extension is important) and added a shortcut to it to my startup folder. I have to click OK twice on bootup, but that's way better than always having my icons shuffled!

Well, I've been using the iconfix.reg solution since my previous post. It work around 70% of the time, but when it didn't, I still had to restore my icon placement manually. I got fed up of this so went looking for a utility to do it for me. I found IconSaver which works great. It's such a simple yet effective utility that I had to come back here and add it to this thread. I hope someone finds this info useful.

I have a 2 monitor set up and I rarely seen the desktop with the icons on my second monitor. That would be a duplicate with my primary monitor when I have the desk top running. I usually use 2 application at the same time one on #1 and the other on#2 and I can slide the back and forth. Some times by restoring the down you can run 4 apps. Is'nt suppose to run that way? (Without the desktop Icons on #2, just the background color).
PS: I did see a duplicate at one time or another but all I did was reboot and they went away on #2.
