Pixel Shaders in JK2

I see the option for some kind of texture pixel shaders under the video options menu. What do these shaders do? where can I see this effect?

i have no idea
i finished the entire game and didn't notice anything.
it must be a very subtle effect.

They aren't anything special, just a little more advanced than the orignal Quake3 "shaders", they still don't use any special hardware.
