Apparently its an issue with the availability of Blu ray, pushed back to november for japan who knows when for US.

Well as long as its Nov in NA it dosent bother me much, as up until a few months ago everyone was under the impression it was coming out in the fall, then at E3 they said spring and everyone started going "I WANT IT TO COME OUT NOW!"
I may be getting a nice $500 pay day in OCTt, so that would be perfect for a PS3 for me lol

I can't believe Sony (or any company) would risk their most important product on the success or failure of an unproven format like blu-ray.

What if blu-ray falls on its face? What if HD-DVD or another format becomes the mainstream HD format? Then what? Although I don't actually believe blu-ray issues are the only thing delaying the PS3.

well, it doesn't matter too much in japan. However, they better get it out for the holidays here in the states, 'cause if they miss TWO holiday seasons in the US, xbox360 is gonna brutalize them.

They're trying to use said product to spearhead the format into people's homes (because that's really the only way for it to become a success... people aren't likely to go out in droves and buy stand-alone Blu-ray players off the bat... but there are surely millions of people who are willing to purchase a new console from Sony, and it just so happens to be able to play Blu-ray movies).....

The concept is great, and has the potential to push the format to a critical mass of acceptance. But it has to succeed, or Sony has another Betamax on their hands. The IGN article quotes someone saying that the delay is because of anti-piracy mesures being finalized on Blue Ray.

Their is no such thing as anti-piracy. Xbox users already use thier Xbox to rip games and FTP it to a computer which they can either burn it as an ISO or play if off a hard drive.

The samething will happen for PS3. Mod-chips, software exploits, or disk-swaping. There is no method that pirates will not use. This is common knowlege to the development team. It just a mater of time before games get cracked.

More of just an excuse, rather than the real reason. I beileive the real reason is cost. The PS3 is just costing to much to masproduce for the price point they are aiming for. Sony is probably overhauling their factories to stream line PS3 production and heighten yeilds as well as reduce cost in the long run.

True. But the corporate pinky dicks in their big offices can only "sell" the HD format to movies studio execs if they are assured that piracy will be a non-issue. The big studios and the RIAA need to see serious copy protection measures or they will not support the format, and worse will cry bloody blue murder. In fact, the RIAA would probably go after any company that came out with an HD format disc with no copy protection measures built in.

And don't forget, Sony is also is heavily invested in movie production, so they have a big interest in piracy issues themselves.

IMO, the HD format wars are going to be very, very bloody, and Sony is hanging its hat on winning. It may very well be Sony's undoing.

Except that unlike beta-max, even if blu-ray fails as a movie format, that doesn't have an impact on PS3 games. We've used proprietary media on game consoles in the past - Nintendo's cartridges, Sega's GD-roms, and now even Sony's UMDs. Knowing that history, what makes simply having Blu-ray so bad for a gaming console? As for the delay itself, it's not going to have much of an impact at this point. First of all, this delay was announced for Japan only, we don't even know when the system was supposed to have launched in America. Will this delay hurt them in terms of sales? Not much, in Japan at least, I'm afraid. Microsoft is a nonissue over there, and we still have yet to see what Nintendo's offering at launch for the Revolution. Hell, now the Rev and PS3 will be launching at about the same time, so Nintendo may see their launch overshadowed by Sony's. In America, it's really up to what Microsoft can do from now until the PS3 is released. I own a 360, and I do like it, but I can see why many people might have chosen to wait it out. They need stronger titles. Sure, Ghost Recon and Oblivion may be good, but what else does Microsoft have? I think they need more diversity in their lineup, but that may just be me. The biggest thing they need is to end this ridiculous hardware shortage. It's been four months since launch, and people still can't find 360's anywhere. Microsoft might have more time alone in the next-gen market, but what good is that gonna do them if they don't have systems to sell? The more people wait, the less inclined they are going to be to buy a 360. Also, what do you all think PS3 devs are doing with their games right now, while Sony figures out the blu-ray problem? All I can say is that we might see a lot more polished PS3 games by the time the system launches. And I don't mean Untold Legends. That was a piece of crap on the PSP as well, so I don't imagine it being any different on the PS3. I'm talking about games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, and maybe even Fatal Frame 4.

So there goes at least some of the selling point of having an HD drive in the first place. If blu-ray flops, then the PS3 can't be advertised as an HD video console, right? Unless Sony decides to do something very stupid and push out blu-ray HD movies all by themselves. (would not put it past them)

No big deal, but didn't anyone pay attention to the whole notion of a
possible blu-ray/HD-DVD combo drive a while back? Remember, Sony was
the first to dump DVD+R exclusivity and create the first (from what I remember)
DVD+/-R combo drive. Don't make any assumptions yet.

You fail to understand that if they ship a box that says playstation on it and plays blueray discs then blueray wins because people will almost buy PS3s based on the name alone and thus blueray market share jumps tenfold.

Could of been a different situation had MS launched with HD-DVD drive and lets face it whos gonna buy a stupid addon drive for their 360.

However this is all fine because blueray is the superior format and deserves to win whether you like sony or not.

Betamax was superior to VHS and VHS still won in the the public mind by having broader acceptance. The superior tech does not always win and given the higher costs of the players and media compared to HD-DVD will be prohibitive to get the mass acceptance they need.

Enthusiasts buy the best tech bar none, but the common person buys what is most affordable for them and if they see HD-DVD and Blu-Ray next to each other they will go with the most cost effective solution and that is where HD-DVD wins. They both play HD content but which one is more affordable is the question most people ask themselves.
