AMD Radeon HD 6870 becomes the Radeon HD 6990M to fight GTX 580M

AMD have released a new Mobility Radeon GPU, the Radeon HD 6990M. Unlike it's desktop counterpart, it's a single GPU core part, and it's not based on the Cayman VLIW-4 architecture; it's the full desktop specification Barts XT GPU core, lower clocked and known as Blackcomb.

The full specifications are available on AMD's website now, and you can buy two in an Alienware - for $700 cheaper than two GTX 580M's, which AMD are claiming the performance crown from.

Yes, AMD are stating that the GTX 580M (which is comparable to the GTX 485M, matched by the 6970M) is not as fast as the HD 6990M. It's also a lot more expensive, as evidenced by the Alienware pricing.

You can read more about the GPU's at Anandtech.com

The really interesting products are going to be those based on AMD's A-series APU, levaraging Bus Alive Chip Off for demand based power graphics. Hopefully we'll see some soon.

edit - here's a video about it:

I thought a 6870 = A 5870 which = 6970 which should equal 6990 if it's a 6870?

**** AMD and thier naming.

EDIT***So yeah both 6970 and 6990 are both Blackcomb PROs, the difference is the 6990 has more stream processors and a few more texture units. So it;s still a Pro, and not XT. At least.. In reference to Anands article.

6870 is not a 5870. It's Barts ASIC, which is based on Cypress but has differences in how the stream cores work, the graphics engine, etc. Barts on mobility is Blackcomb, cut down to fit power profile.

6970M is Blackcomb, same as 6990M.

It's called Pro because of the clocks, but it has full radeon core count etc. from original Barts.

Wow! That's some serious rendering power to have in a laptop. Even with the reduced clock speeds, it could still beat the 4870 I have in my desktop.
