That QA for Rebel Galaxy was good, but they failed to address the elephant in the room which is that Steam will probably sell far more copies due to the number of people using it. Although I guess you could also say that Steam is flooded with so much utter crap that Rebel Galaxy might be hidden away on the store.

Well I don't know. Epic Launcher has 200+ million people using it, where as Steam's last known number from 2016 was 125 million. This might actually get their game in the front of more eyes than Steam will, and because Steam is full of shovelware that covers up the good stuff.

This "competition" (can you really call it that when it's an exclusive release?) is only good for me (the consumer) if the prices are cheaper. If they are NOT cheaper, then this is just yet another irritation in having to make an account on yet another game launcher for another company.

Origin for example, annoys me to no end. You sign into their service and after a week or two, it signs you out which forces you to resign in. Unless I keep post-it notes all over my screen or use the same password for everything (risky) I can't always remember the password off the top of my head, not with 10 million passwords being added to my brain for everything these days.

As a consumer, I see no benefit at all to this store change. There is no choice, so it's not even "competition" when a title is exclusive. I cannot see any plus side to this as a consumer.

Great point. Games wont be cheaper this is only a play for money. For Epic to grab some of the steam money and for developers to keep more of their own money. None of those Steam savings will be pushed to the customer. We can for sure count this as yet another game launcher that does nothing for the consumer.

For the consumer, yes, there is nothing goode about this. No real negatives other than forcing yet another store app, but a side from that its a non event. For the inde developer though, It's a small blessing. Still only a small one, but it would be nice if steam dropped their price a bit.

Well, for those of us that knew and used Impulse, competition can mean the end of access to your games.

Valve really needs to get their **** straight. When EA made Origin and did not put their new titles on Steam, it should have lit a fire under their derriere. They lost Destiny 2 and COD Blops. Then Bethesda with Fallout 76 (thankfully it's ****).

I waffle on the fact that there's an endless stream of crap pouring into Steam; I think there should be as little of a barrier to entry as possible, but I also don't like sifting through a dozen hentai games for every mid-grade indie title that's worth a ****.

The benefit for the consumer is a long term benefit. If the indie developers can get more money from their games, they can re-invest that money into making even better games. The consumer getting better games from the indies is very much a benefit for the consumer.

But yeah, Ubisoft said something as well.

But after looking at Epic Games history, they released UT3 in 2007 on the PC, then the next PC game was in 2011 with Bulletstorm, and then the next PC games was in December 2015 Shadow Complex Remastered. Since December 2015 all their games have been on the PC.

Here is my theory about what changed their tune towards PC gaming:
The use of their Engine and the business model around it. The costs for their engine is very affordable even for an indie developer, and it is a top tier game engine. Plus they had their creators market where creators were able to sell Unreal Engine assets to other creators. The numerous indie developers probably became lucrative for them.

And now they are having this new Epic store, where it entices the use of their engine even more, and the store really seems to be targeting the Indie/AA market.

Installed the client.

There's no search, sort, or list. The storefront is trash. When you click on a game it brings you to a 80% screen video, where the title of the game is dead center, obfuscating what little utility the video would have. They actually made it worse than Origin's store.

Sounds exactly what Steam (and all the other storefronts) was like in their infancy, when they had less than 10 titles for sale and had to push focus on a couple titles.

As the number of titles available grows, those other quality of life features will no doubt begin to appear. You don't need "search" when there's like 10 titles on your store.

I believe you that things will get better as games get added, but I do not like the initial impression at all... and I doubt that their store will come anywhere close to Steam's functionality if Origin/Windows/Uplay are examples to go by.

Sadly, it's probably the type of digital storefront that makes the most money.

I consider the indie developers getting more money that they can reinvest into future projects a benefit for gamers. We potentially get better games out of it.

The indie devs that are on it are already rich and successful though, the struggling devs are never going to end up there.

EPIC game store is basically what steam used to be for indie devs, and back then everyone complained about how picky valve was.

I dunno, it's yet another login that I have to remember and keep track of. Especially with it also being the same account for Fortnight and reading about how many people try to hack/steal those accounts. I'm gonna hard pass for the time being.

I'm already annoyed that Bethesda is now starting their own thing and they've already leaked a bunch of customer information. It's exhausting at this point trying to keep up with everything and making sure your account/information doesn't get compromised.

Good luck to the indie devs though.
