That board is ~$20 more expensive than the non-WIFI version, so if you have no use for wireless, then go with the non-WIFI version for $178. I don't see a reason for you to get an X570 board since you won't be able to tweak much on the Ryzen, and you don't plan on using a ton of expansion slots (multiple NVME, etc).

I do plan over time to add more than one nvme so springing for a more expensive mobo might be a better option.

That board has the capability to run 2 NVME drives, so it should be good. One runs off the CPU lanes and is PCIE4.0 capable, and the other is off the Motherboard PCH, and only PCIE3.0 capable. Like I said, I wouldn't stress the PCIE4.0 SSDs.. the real-world difference is to the point of splitting hairs over tenths of a second.

If you want to spring for an X570 board, then I recommend this:

Check this out on @Newegg: ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero AM4 AMD X570 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard https://www.newegg.com/asus-rog-cros...808-_-08012021

It's expensive, but quality. Best X570 board on the market and it doesn't have an annoying chipset fan. I wouldn't touch any other X570 board .. really, none of them come close to the Dark Hero. It's significantly more expensive, but I'm a big proponent of going with a good motherboard. Everything plugs into, and runs through, the mobo - IMO, it makes sense to go for quality for that component.

I would not get a 3200 kit and try to overclock it to 3600. x570 and AM4 platform is flaky af.
Also you can get a Sabrent PCIe 4 in the price of Crucial P5 - maybe add extra 10 bucks.
I don’t think you need a Dark Hero VIII if you are not overclocking. Good components and all. Even an Aorus Master is good enough if you want to splurge plus you keep 100 extra in your pocket. Otherwise a tomahawk or TUF is sufficient. Aorus Ultra if you want to spend more.
I also wouldn’t touch an EK AIO. Too many problems reported with them (far more than any other AIO I have read about). Plus those Vardar fans will make your ears bleed.

Rest of list by Nunz is good.

The kit I linked was 3600, I just typo'd 3200 by mistake.

I don't think he needs a Dark Hero either, but if he's going to spend more on a board, he might as well get the best there is. I wouldn't touch a Gigabyte motherboard if they gave it away to me .. garbage BIOS, terrible support. MSI is the only other I'd consider, but even my Z490 ACE is missing some features that the ASUS Z490/Z590 boards handle better, like OCTVB and V/F curve OCing.

Haven't heard anyone really complain about the EK AIO, and it gets glowing reviews. The pump design is much better than any of the Asetek re-brand garbage everyone else is selling. Vardar fans aren't bad - just don't run them at max speed, which seems kind of obvious lol..

Oh I didn’t click. If it is 3600 then sure.

EK AIO I researched a lot and had tons of problems. Mostly 1 month or so later pumps dying, leaks, electric issues blah blah. I was set on buying it and I read a lot and it had a very high failure rates. It definitely reviews well but that is just stress testing for 3-6 hours or whatever.

It’s same issues with Arctic also but Arctic has had 4 revisions and now is on revision 5. Don’t know about EK but it just reminds me of the predator nonsense I had to put up with and I can’t recommend them as a brand.

Ultimately it’s his choice, for me the warranty hassle with EK is just not worth it.

Speaking of why he should stick with ASUS ..

BIOS update just bricked my MSI Z490 ACE..

Has the quality of the vardars gone up?

Last time I used them, you were lucky if you didn't get one with a grinding/some kind of bearing noise.

Nope, still 10900K + MSI Z490 ACE. I've been waiting for Alderlake or potentially the X299 successor.

I'm not thrilled at all right now.. lol, but anyway don't want to derail this thread. Get the ASUS board lol

As for NVMe I'd run with HP EX950 2TB. Great drive!

Since 5900x supports gen4 nvme I'd definitely be getting a gen4 SSD. Aside from being faster, there are additional technologies for gaming coming out in the form of RTX IO, Windows Direct Storage, and console equivalents.

My 2 cents

Don't think the end-user experience will be much different going from gen 3 to 4, this based on LTT blind test of SSHD / SSD / NVMe.

When NVMe 2.0 drops however I think we *might* percieve a difference.

Prices will make more sense in another year or two, and then he can grab one. Doesn't make sense, imo, to blow cash on a PCIE4.0 SSD right now, unless you are going for just a 1TB. I can say that 1TB was simply not enough storage, not with the size of games lately. I upgraded to the 2TB because of it

If no Wi-Fi is needed, another alternative to consider on the mobo is the MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK. Abit of a critical darling and it's pricing has become more attractive now if you want to spend less.

It's the technologies that require gen4+ more so than end user experience related to speeds.

RTX IO and Windows direct access for games require gen4 or better, to bring PC up to par with consoles with features like quick resume and the ability to stream larger worlds and assets on the fly. Windows update for this is not far away and gen4+ is a requirement.

I wonder if the requirements have changed?

MS states that you need a gen3 drive, Nvidia claims that you need a gen4 drive, someone has to be incorrect.

I will pick up a Sabrent Rocket if gen 4 is required. I have been wanting that drive for a while now.
Also I would assume Nvidia knows more than MS about RTX IO.

They are slightly different technologies:

Quote:
Microsoft DirectStorage is notably different to the concept put forward by Nvidia with its RTX I/O API, in that it copies the compressed data across to system memory before copying to the GPU VRAM. Once in the graphics card VRAM, the GPU can then decompress the data much quicker than the CPU can. Nvidia's solution works in largely the same way, although bypasses the system memory completely, and copies the data straight from the drive to the graphics card.
RTX IO seems like the beefier implementation.

It has been noted that gen4 will provide a better experience for MS Direct Access too, but I assume the install base is too small right now so they dropped requirement to gen3 to get this tech off the ground.

All I know is if I was building a rig in mid/late 2021 and my platform supported it, I'd definitely be getting gen4, but it's nothing to stress about yet.

He would need to check US pricing. I'll probably be gone for a while, so good luck with your new setup logical

Oh, that Q model from Sabrent isn't very good apparently, there's a reason it's priced so low. I believe the Sabrent model you want to buy is the "Rocket PLUS"

That Sabrent rocket is not much over gen3 speeds. You want the Sabrent Rocket Plus if you're going gen4 imho.

7000 MB/s (read) 5300 MB/s (write) 650k IOPS

But sure, for $10 more it's decent.

Doesn't bother me, we need more excitement around here.

Speaking of excitement, just grab a 980 pro. Living on the edge without knowing when your SSD may explode is quite the thrill. And it's super fast.

7000MB/s (read), 5100MB/s (write), 1 million IOPS (explosion factor)

I was very clear that I was talking about comparable speeds. But yeah whatever. Buy whatever you can afford.

Nunz recommended P5 and it was a response to that exact drive that you can get a Sabrent comparable drive which is gen 4.

yes I missed that context, KAC. The only issue, is the "Q" series being QLC which makes it, in my opinion, a worse drive than the Crucial P5. P5 is TLC.

I firmly believe quality PCIE3.0 drives will handle RTX IO with no issues, and if it does become an issue, PCIE4.0 drives will be much cheaper by then. We're about to start the push for PCIE5.0 drives with Intel introducing it by the end of this year.
