heheh imagine this thing running on a server farm for remote streaming services that wasn't prepared for **** like this

In all seriousness, wasn't that long since we got the GPU accelerated space invaders on the 2080Ti cards. Feel I got lucky there....

EVGA has been blasted top to bottom for skimping on Ampere. They have always, in the past, had some of the highest quality designs, but the FTW3 have issues with power balancing that is far beyond just some firmware update. No BIOS fix is going to stop the card from drawing 90w from the PCIE slot while the 3rd 8pin is sitting at 80w. It's an issue with the design of the card. This isn't some new thing that just came about.

It's not that they used 'low end' components, it is more robust than reference. It's just poorly designed, or an oversight, in respect to power balancing.

I opened an RMA to see if I qualify for replacement. I probably won't bother unless I can get it cross shipped. Or it blows up

My 3090 got so fried, that now it looks like toast crumbs, and it also caused my receipt to catch fire. No really EVGA, I had one. Please replace.

I have to agree that this is a hardware issue. It shouldn't be possible for software to accidentally brick a card. Like even if the game is programmed in the most incompetent way possible, your GPU should still not self destruct while playing it.

I wouldn't quote Jay's thoughts on this at all. His reactions to this issue oozes of wanting to keep a good relationship with EVGA, who he has worked closely with over the years.

Other gaming forums are criticizing jay for posting speculations by his fanbase as facts, and posting inaccurate information (such as blaming the game for pushing his EVGA card to 120% voltage usage when none of the other 3090s he himself tested did that in the very same game).

I don't blame him though, most people in his situation wouldn't want to burn bridges with the manufacturers they rely on for providing the equipment which drives his business to him for free. As far as I can tell he's a good dude who just happens to be in a tough spot.

Edit: Looks like in a rush to get to market and meet deadlines, some manufacturers cheaped out on some components and did not do adequate testing, and now that next gen titles which push their hardware are coming out the consequences are being felt.

A better way to stand by your customers is to stop making crap in the first place.

I've recently learned that there is a PCB revision of the 3090 ftw3 that solves the load balancing issue. My old card was 0.1 and the new one I got is 1.0 as it keeps the PCI slot power at 66w under load. I'm not sure, but I have a feeling the 0.1 cards are dying and NW just helped speed up the death process for a lot of those cards as PCI slot power runs out of spec. It would be nice if EVGA filled us in on its revisions instead of being so cagey and having the community figure it out.

if true in a way it was a good thing new world started killing them. the death may have been a much longer drawn out process otherwise if you weren't playing super taxing games all the time. If it died past the warranty you'd be SOL.

I'm surprised that PCI-E slot power being out of spec doesn't hurt the motherboard rather than the GPU?

Thumbs up

Using cheap components on a premium build card and not having them setup correctly seems to be a large part of this issue. NV deserves some of the blame for approving these designs, but ultimately EVGA put crap on the card that isn't handling the demand properly or isn't kicking in appropriately. Buildzoid did a video on this, goes in depth on the VRM and how the overcurrent protection is not working correctly, and that's why cards are going *pop*

@Acroig - Friends don't let friends sell bad products.

@Nagorak - PCIE slot is rated for 75watts much like an 8-pin is rated for 150watts. They are both capable of much more, as long as the components are quality. Good motherboard I wouldn't think twice about drawing 100watts+ out of it. Good PSU with good gage cables will handle 250watt through an 8pin without blinking. The standards are set for the lowest denominator.
