TenFour is still being judged by the masses

Default How should I retire my tower computer?

I have a computer that I built back in 2004 (when I joined this forum!) and periodically swapped parts out on for about 13 years (ship of Theseus). I think the last time I upgraded a performance-related component besides SSD was 8 years ago (upper-mid-range graphics card). I've never swapped out the original tower, which was a low-end one.

Since then I've decided to just use laptops for the convenience. I downscaled my home and don't even have room for a desk. The tower's just sitting in my garage and since I'm moving soon, I figure I should retire it now.

Does it have any value I can recoup? Is there a place to recycle this kind of thing? It would feel so wasteful to throw it away. I don't know if I could sell it for enough to justify the hassle. Would such an old graphics card be worth turning the thing on to mine crypto?

Where I am several companies take old electronics, and a few used computer stores that will pay a minimal amount for computers they can resell cheap or part out.

Yes you can always part it out and sell the bits, but unless you have something unique, for me it always seems to be more work than what I make.

Assuming you have the space to move it, I'd be tempted to repurpose it for your new place. Either as a Linux / BSD machine if you want to learn non-windows, or as a media center / file server. I took a couple of old systems (10+ years) and added a few HDDs (yep, used from a local computer shop) and tuned them into a nice little media server and file server / NAS.

Just remember to wipe the SDD. Not sure what is the best software for that (I use DBAN for HDDs).

Sell it on Craigslist. You can definitely make a bucks by snatching the person’s wallet in the process.

You can get some value on ebay. People still buy old parts for old systems but the time effort to list and ship it might not be worth it. I have a bunch of old crap though and I'm still working out what to do with it. A GPU from 8 years ago might get you a dollar worth of bitcoin after about a month. So not worth it.

If the value of the parts are not worth the time/effort to part out and sell just donate it to a local thrift store like Savers that puts profits towards a charity. You can at least put it towards your tax write offs for donations.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I might look for a local repair shop and see if they'll offer anything for it to part out. Anything beyond that doesn't seem worth the hassle.
