She heard her radio and I think that they get a habit of answering with a certain hand which in that case had the gun and her natural instinct was to move it to the radio. You could see her then use her other hand to use the radio. It's all pretty simple really. Too bad it happened, but dumb **** happens. Cops should have guns still.

I don't see how this can happen with an automatic. Once the slide is pulled back the formerly chambered round becomes extracted and pops onto the floor. Unless the nimrods doing the reporting forgot to add 'he replaced the magazine and racked the slide' what this report says is impossible.

American cops kill far more people by mistake than civilians do (at least per-capita, I'm not sure about absolute levels). This shouldn't be surprising: if a crook breaks into your house and pulls a gun on you you know who the bad guy is... if a cop answers a call, sees you pointing a gun at another guy in self-defence, they have to guess.

How stupid can you be? I can understand a student perhaps doing somthing idiotic like that, but a trained DEA agent? ...

You live in CA so I guess you've never handled a gun. Having done exactly what this article said the DEA agent did it simply isn't possible for what happened to have happened. There was no magazine in the butt of the gun, the extractor would have extracted the round in the hole. There should have been no cartidges in the gun. Are YOU that dumb or is it lack of experince?

Technically, the weapon is a semi-automatic, not automatic; the trigger is required to be pulled back for each individual shot. Asking a member of the audience to see if a gun is loaded or not is not a wise thing to do; most have never handled a firearm, and as a result a few would likely not know what to look for, even with a shell staring the in the face. If the slide is not pulled back all the way, the bullet will not eject. And clip removal does not ensure removal of the chambered bullet, depending on the weapon (I do not know what standard issue is for those guys, but there are semis that leave a chambered bullet after ejection of the cartridge). Either way, a dumb thing to happen.

DEA probably uses Glock or Beretta, I've got a friend who's old man was in the DEA so I can ask him next time I see'em.

He drew his .40-caliber duty weapon and removed the magazine, according to the police report. He then pulled back the slide and asked an audience member to look inside the gun and confirm it wasn't loaded.

Witnesses said when the agent released the slide, one shot fired into the top of his left thigh.

To date on EVERY gun that's an automatic (if you look it up it's called an automatic although it's not automatic firing but loading) that I've handled and it's been a fair many the extractor extracts the cartridge. There should NOT have been a cartridge in that weapon PERIOD. Given that it fired into his thigh while pointed at the floor there are only two ways to have opened the slide, one of which would have obscured the chamber and it would have had to been locked, the other a much weaker and more awkward grip.

Also don't try to teach guns to an ex-GI. We already know plenty about them.

Problem is that it's "property of the US government" so i would rather have big brother not know i have it. Thats why i wont attempt at registering it.


Btw... you would be suprised. California is not solely San Francisco (the communist north) and Los Angeles (mexico). Lots of people hunt, fish, and own guns. But i do understand the stereotype of the average californian. Bunch of left wing, gun hating, socialists.

Hmm... I've been fishing in Southern Oregon many times when i was younger. My dads buddy lives in Grants Pass and we would go salmon fishing on the Rogue river for salmon every summer for like 6 years. That region is so beautiful.

It is possible for a round to catch when ejecting and stay in the barrel; if it falls back into position, say via gravity, then you have a live round in the chamber. It is extremely rare for a gun to fire when the slide is released, but not impossible. This was mainly really bad luck combined with the officer's distraction.

Pistols are semi-automatic, but called automatic.....really outdated nomenclature that I dislike, but way too ingrained in gun culture to be changed.

I sat here with a couple different guns, loaded with snap-caps, trying to recreate what they claim happened.

Only thing that I can think of, was that they removed the mag(not clip, mind you) and racked the slide, and either did not pull it back far enough to eject the round, or perhaps the extracter is wonky and failed to grab and eject the round.

I never ever hand anyone a gun to check. I am cautious to the point that even if I watch you check the firearm right in front of me, I immediately check it myself just to be sure.

hehe just gotta give you Californian's ****. I'm probably moving to Redding (which I think this location thing says) in October or so and plan on moving down there with a CA legal AR-15 based on the FAB-10 receiver.

Squire, I too tried that but with live ammo and pointed WELL away from my body and the ONLY way I got my P99 to not extract and eject the round was to pull the slide V-E-R-Y slowly. Given this was a class I'm guessing the DEA agent probably did not move it that slow.
