Default memory usuage

I've just been noticing lately that my harddrives have been working a little too much for my liking. It seems like every new web page i open grinds my drives yet again despite the fact that I have almost 750 MB free.....I have all of the chipset drivers etc etc installed am I missing something here I mean I clicked the new thread button and they start spinning...any advice?
