Default 3080 stock shortage is set to worsen

https://www.techradar.com/news/nvidi...prices-to-rise

Quote:
Nvidia’s RTX 3000-series stock shortage could be about to get even worse, according to a European retailer.

Supply issues have been a consistent issue with the latest generation of GPUs from Nvidia, with a global shortage of GDDR6 memory believed to be one of the contributing factors, as well as global efforts to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine.

Things are unlikely to improve any time soon, as retailer Alternate, which operates in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, has received confirmation from Nvidia that the availability of its latest GPUs – including the RTX 3080 and RTX 3060 Ti – will continue to worsen throughout the first quarter.

“Unfortunately, we have received the news from both manufacturers and Nvidia that the availability of the RTX 3000 series cards will deteriorate further in the first quarter of 2021,” the retailer states in a notice on its website.

“This is due to the poor availability of raw materials and Nvidia chips, but also to the Chinese New Year, which causes a temporary closure of factories."

According to the retailer, the RTX 3080 and RTX 3060 Ti will be the most difficult GPUs to buy, with “very few deliveries” and “many open orders”. This means it’s likely that even those who pre-ordered the GPUs could have a months-long wait on their hands.

“This means that the chance of an RTX 3080, especially for new orders, is virtually nil,” Alternate adds.

Your luck might be better with the RTX 3070 and RTX 3090, as although the retailer is expecting “small quantities” of these GPUs throughout the quarter, they aren't nearly as popular and thus have shorter waiting lists.

The news gets even worse for those who have yet to order an RTX 3000-series graphics card. The retailer warns that while prices will stay the same for those who pre-ordered an Ampere GPU, prices for new orders will “continue to rise in the near future due to market forces.”
Sorry guys.

Nope. I was just passing along what I saw on my newsfeed. I thought some people here might be interested in the news. I know a lot of guys are looking for 3080's still.

Some have already been caught...

https://www.pcmag.com/news/msi-subsi...-cards-on-ebay

That being said, I don't think that is what is going on here.

There is a world wide silicon shortage and it's not just limited to the GPUs.

GM is set to lose $2 billion this year because of it.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-g...-idUSKBN2AA0E4

So, in the mean time, GPU's will be in short supply. In return, the demand for them and the increase in prices due to tariffs will drive their price points through the roof.

Well Samsung announced they are building a new fab plant but that won't have production until 2023.

I really don't see supply every catching up until more manufacturing plants are operational....only 2 years wait folks.

Does anyone believe the difficulty with acquiring top-end gpus will affect game development regarding overall graphical quality?

no

it should not 1080p and 1440p are good with current cards 2000's and above for most users
with out RT the rt 5700 xt, 1080 and 1080 ti are fine for 1080p

and all new games still have to play on the PS4 anyway

It will affect pushing RTX schedule in a big way.

other than the RTX games already in the pipeline almost all RT games from now on will be made for PS5 & xbox series x in mind and then ported

The performance with RTX sucks on 20 series imo except 1080p in games like Cyberpunk 2077.The 2080ti is ok in 1080p but the bigger resolution go under 60fps.
People that bought 2080 or 2070 may not run 1080p and 1440p is kinda shaky performance...
RTX just reset the market to 1080p and 60fps again imo ... Fortunetly is not mandatory but it looks too nice where is implemented nicely..

Cyberpunk 2077 sucks donkey ...... .

i can play Cyberpunk 2077 at 4k with RTX on and G-Sync fine and it is the worst one of all the RT games all 26 of them
and i wouldn't buy a lot of them
https://www.digitaltrends.com/comput...a-ray-tracing/

and even the 3080 can't do 60+ FPS at 4k in Cyberpunk 2077 it is only 30% faster than a 2080 ti

Remember the Directx 10 begginings days and 2900xt how low performance was. Also one game was ... Crysis
I feel the RTX kinda like that now ...
Disabling DLSS and playing with RTX to see how humiliating is ...
I tried RTX in 2019 with free months of Geforce Now..I played in single player for Metro Exodus just for the sake of RTX.1080p wutg 60fps capped . Fortunetly i am well versed in 1080p 60 hz / 60fps so i didn't mind...

You can feel what you like but 2000 and 3000 series owners will disagree with you about RTX. Bill does not like it and we all know it but most do.

Badsykes I'm currently playing COD:CW and BFV with Ultra RT, no DLSS at about 100+ fps at 1440p. Not bragging just saying. So it's possible but obviously comes at a monetary cost.

I really want the RTX to take off ... This was the tech the i waited for years...I remember i saw it in a tech demo when GTX 480
Seeing how AMD implemented it and Nvidia needing DLSS to have 60 FPS with most of the cards is kinda .. I am talking Cyberpunk here.
Also the Geforce Now experience with Metro Exodus RTX implementation was not a perfect one either.Let latency aside i had moments with under 60fps.
i am thinking to play Cyberpunk when there will a new line of GPU's that do not require DLSS to play RTX at over 60fps and not cost 900$+ ... I will let it cook a little

This is not good news for mass implementation imo...

Why is that? Have you tried it yourself? Both nV and AMD are going with DLSS type tech for good reason, it works and if done well you can't tell the difference.

Despite what Bill says Cyberpunk is a great RTX showcase and depending on hardware and res can be played 60-100 FPS with RTX on thanks to DLSS and it looks great.

Back on topic it's certainly looking grim if this rumour turns out to be true.
