Default GTA 3 VS Mafia

I know these games are rather old, well, not that old, but you know what I mean. A friend of mine and I were having a debate on which is better. I say Mafia is better, and he says GTA 3 is better, so I'm wondering what do you people think?? which is better and why do you think that? Do you feel GTA 3 offers more to do and more replay value?

Mafia:
+ High quality
+ Realistic cars
+ Very integrated FPS part
+ Good story
+ Cars that actually look good
+ Varied city and quite beatifull scenery
- Taxing on low end systems

GTA3:
+ Its fun to crash cars at high speeds
+ Its fun to run over people at equally high speeds
- Poor story
- Poor detail
- Poor FPS part
- Pretty poor scenery with a blocky city
- Also taxing on low end systems

My choice is obvious

I think both games are great, but If I had to choose between the two it would definitely be Mafia. Don't get me wrong, GTA 3/VC is an awesome game, but it was too arcadey for me, compared to Mafia. In Mafia, Lost Heaven has its own "laws"... you can get pulled-over for speeding and running a read light, you can even get arrested if seen carrying a gun. Those little things made it another thing to worry about during play, which was great.

Gameplay
Mafia = GTA 3/VC

Graphics
Mafia > GTA 3/VC

Replay value
GTA 3/VC > Mafia

Sound
Mafia > GTA 3/VC

Story
Mafia > GTA 3/VC

I absolutely loved gta3 and mafia, but I really wasn't a fan of vice city. I don't think mafia has much replay value, but for the first time through it's excellent, and the story kicks ass.

Mafia has the better story and atmosphere (maybe) but GTA3/VC has a ton more replay value and that is important. Plus GTA has an MP3 radio station.

I was really looking forward to Mafia, but when I played the demo, I was unimpressed in comparison to GTAIII. I hope Mafia 2 will be better. Played True Crime today on Gamecube and I really hope they bring it to PC, hate the cheezy one liners though.

Mafia gives me that sense of love that few games do, but I really enjoyed Vice City too. I'd say Mafia in the same way people like the Godfather more than Caddyshack, but you don't always want to watch The Godfather... I'm glad they are both there.

EDIT: I'm talking about Vice City here, because GTA 3 was too piss poor of a port for me to play through.

I'd say for being similar games (cars and guns) they are incredibly different.

Mafia is better because it has a better story and a cooler setting.

GTA3 is more mindless and comedic, but sometimes mindless is good.

Mafia revolves more around the sequential plot of missions, whereas GTA3 is more freeform and it's possible to just jump in and play for a few minutes doing whatever.

Yeah they are both very good, but GTAVC has better "mad thrashing about action" whereas mafia is quite 1 dimenisional. I don't really have a favourite they are both pretty good.

I played the mafia demo, wasn't that impressed - was on an old computer so it ran like crap. GTA3 has a better feel to it - I like the arcadeyness and I don't particularly like old cars like in mafia. Also gtavc>gta3>mafia

Mafia and GTA 3 are very different games. (go ahead adn laugh...) I think they are both great! Now if it was Mafia vs GTA VC then definitely Mafia. But GTA3 VS Mafia its about the same for me. But its like comparing apple and oranges at same time.

When I played GTA 3 I had a sense of deja-vu. I mean, when I'm ranking a game, gameplay is basically my number one focus. GTA was way too repetitive, and while driving around running over people can be fun, it's been done. I just dled the original GTA from Rockstar's site, and I like it more than GTA 3.

Mafia, on the other hand, was amazing. The story was well developed, the graphics were top-notch, the sound/music was way up there, and overall, the game just felt "right".

I didn't say as much as I wanted to say, since I don't want to spoil the game's story for anybody, so I'll post the rest of my thoughts later.

Don't Judge Mafia just by the demo. It is an excellent game and it just seems amazing how the developers managed to create such a realistic world.

I would prefer Mafia over GTA3 and GTAvc. GTAvc was better than GTA3 though.

I don't know about Mafia's demo, i just know that the full game is an amazing experience. GTA is the ordinary console crap you'd expect (and fun for a while) but it's nothing compared to Mafia.

Mafia is perfect. It has the graphics, the story and the music that makes you feel like your in the 30's.I love it,and I play it every once in a while.I just wished it had more missions or an expansion pack to play as Morrellos gang.

IMO both are great and very fun games, but Mafia just feels much more polished and has better graphics and realism (and not too much to hinder the fun factor). Not to mention the story is definitely superior to the GTA games. I love the GTA games, but I really had to choose, Mafia's my pick!

Mafia had the best story, GTA3 is just great for it's freedom, I can't say one is better than the other because it's comparing apples and oranges, despite the driving and 3rd person shooting being exactly the same

EDIT: I should metion GTA3's RealGTA mod, without it I'd have stopped playing it much longer ago.

what hurts Mafia compared to GTA3 is the lack of side missions and other interesting stuff that you could do all the time in GTA3 .

Both are great games.

But i think this can pretty much sum it up.

Mafia:

Played it from beginning to end.
Loved every single minute of it.
Was both shocked and sad to see it end, and end the way that it did (for those that beat it you know what i mean).
Its the type of game with a character that you actually feel connected to.
It transcends the bounds of just on-screen interaction, and it really immerses you into this fantasy world that you feel you really are a part of.
Mafia kicks ass.
Unlocking Free Ride Extreme mode at the end of the game makes it a little more like GTA series in that you can go around doing pretty much whatever.
However, its not as intriguing as the Story mode, which i went back and beat again 2 more times.

GTA 3 / Vice City
Love the mindless action, the car chases, the crashes, the stunts, the atmosphere, its really fun to put it simply.
However, the story isnt all that inspiring.
You cant connect too well with the character or feel remorse for the situation hes in because hes always blowing sh1t up.
As a result, i Never completed Vice City (did GTA3). Basically never felt enough drive to see what happens, but instead just drove around (no pun intended).
Good for coming back to a few minutes everyday just to let loose and not care about what blows up or who lives and who dies.

In the end however, Mafia slightly edges out GTA series, just because of how memorable of an experience it is.

I bought Mafia and played it and loved it. One of the best games I've played, ever..

I then bought GTAIII cheap for my PS2 and only have played 30minutes of it and got sidetracked by other things. I felt directionless and really missed the story that Mafia had..

I'd have to say Mafia was the better of the two games.

More realistic (not that I know what it was like to drive a 1920's car and shoot a tommy gun )

Lots of attention to detail

You felt like it was personal to you what happened to your character

Getting a new car unlocked felt great, you saw all the cool cars that you couldnt steal making it more rewarding when you could

I had dreams I was a mafia don after playing the game all day LOL, luckily I didnt put a horses head in anyones bed (that I know of) thats one of the few games to do that to me (one of the others was Tetris, lots of people have had dreams about falling blocks due to that game so im not TOTALLY crazy hehe)

Also the latest patch for the game improved things further for ATI cards (and was released something like a year after the game was so thats dedicated support for you )

Yes, that's it, nail on the head, that's what was missing, the freeride mode just isn't quite the same, I want to use all those cars I stocked up into the garage, makes even my radeon lag a bit

I also wanted to add that Mafia has way better gunfights IMO. The one in the parking lot is one that sticks out in my head becuase you can be killed just as easily as you can kill the enemies.

Still I find myself reinstalling Vice City more than I do Mafia partly because Mafia starts out a LOT slower (I've never played the demo but if it was one of the first 5 or so missions then I can see why it wouldn't leave such a great impression on people) and because Vice City just has a whole lot more to explore plus it has quite a bit of mods that make things interesting.

By no means am I saying Mafia is a bad game, it's an incredible game with a truley superb story-line but GTA games are more fun replay wise.. and some of the cheat codes are fun (armed pedestrians and rioting pedestrians is fun ).
