Default Favorite method to apply Thermal Paste (AS5 Paste)

Well, I'm picking the popular method after this thread

But I've been doing the Saran Wrap method for years now

I had to double take as I read it fast as 'How to apply ass paste'

I voted CC, but I actually use a pin, hold it sideways to spread thinly.

I was assembling a PC for this burly fellow the other day, and I accidentally pressed too hard on the thermal paste and made a good quarter-sized goop on the mainboard, on top of these miniscule microchips..

I had fun with aftershave + and a Q-tip.

Ive always done it how, it says on AS website. Depends on the CPU your installing, old CPU's that had no heatspreader had to be spread.

Nothing has changed between now and then either. The makers of Arctic Silver still state that the proper method is a drop in the center and use the heatsink to spread it.

that's was my favorite method as well, but only if the HSF allowed me to do it. The stock fan is commonly cornered by the socket plastic rim and prevent to do it. I received my Zalman fan for my HTPC yesterday and I was finally able to do it

Tonight I will be building my first Core2, I think I will try the CC method.

In the end the best source for this info is the maker of the paste. I would trust what Artic Silver says.

Yea wrap your finger in some kitchen plastic wrap and mash the TP around on both the HS and CPU. I dun trust the squish method will evenly distribute it all over :X
Then smooth out the surface with a card to avoid air gaps.

i tried manually spreading it once just for fun on a PentD 820. after a few days, i removed the hsf. it looked like the cracked earth of a desert. back to the drop and squish.

Wifey's a nurse so I have access to rubber gloves which I cut up for using the bag/wrap method. Plus I like seeing it spread the way I want it.

Your put enough to cover the core only, and then place down the HSF on top of the CPU.
