Original Duke Nukem Forever circa 2001 has leaked

One of the most sought-after pieces of lost media in gaming has been discovered, as the E3 2001 build of Duke Nukem Forever has leaked online. Much like the Nintendo Gigaleak from 2020, the Duke Nukem Forever leak offers a tantalizing glimpse at what could have been, especially following the disappointment of the retail version of the game from 2011.

The old build engine games that came before are still some of the best... They should remaster them.

From what little there is in the video it already looks like it would have come together far better than what it ended up being (The end product feeling rushed and sloppy, and stuck between gaming style of old and the gaming style of current)......

The eventual product was a rushed-to-market version of what was stuck in development hell at the time. There simply wasn't much left to make a good game out of, I'm convinced. Had DNF been properly produced at the time, so that it would've made it to release within its own era, it might've been a fun adventure. But five development hells later, it was too late, too weak, too shitty to turn around.

So Gearbox jumped in, put some duct tape and tie wraps on it, and sent it out for the world to see.

Personally, I'm glad they did. I'm happier with the shitty game and closed chapter, than I would've been with another fifteen years of wondering. For the same reason, I wish Valve would either get off their asses and make a Half-Life 3, or hand the keys to Arkane or something. Waiting for so long for a game that might come has been fun for exactly zero seconds. DNF's released product was fun for at least a handful of seconds.

From what I've read, it's just a smattering of incomplete levels with no real coherency to them. It literally is pre-alpha, just a series of test levels. From a curiosity standpoint, it may be mildly entertaining but don't expect much from it. Youtube pretty much shows it all at this point.

It could be really cool if some people mod it into more. Either way, it's a really cool look at what could have been.

Looks like it could be a fun and competent shooter, but seems to lack alot of the charm of the original. Somehow it's been very difficult for anyone to capture that since. Closest we've gotten is prolly Crow teams' efforts.

I think everything nowadays being ultrarealistic and photorealistic kind of ruins the charms of old school simplicity where physics didnt matter.

Its kind of wierd because Doom 2016 sort of recaptured that old school magic but something like Serious Sam just ended up being tedius and boring.....

Doom 2016 didn't have the heavy fourth wall stuff and still presented some immersion into the world, with the 90's glowing powerups and such.

When you're playing Serious Sam, you're never thinking about the world you are in.

Man the gameplay of this feels so right. I wish they just locked down the features and finished it as is with 2001 graphics, it didn't need to try to match doom 3s shadows and crap damnit.

The higher-ups at Valve should have just stepped in and fixed their shitty, inefficient organizational structure just long enough to get the game done. Just tell everyone, you're all working on this now, get the damn thing done.
