AMD Financial Times reports AMD to announce ARM based products today

Last week AMD sent out a PR blast advertizing their news day, to be held today. This ambidextrous strategy, as it is known, was first discussed in the Financial Day in Febrary this year and now more details are going to be filled in:

Struggling chipmaker AMD will try to step out of the long shadow cast by arch-rival Intel on Monday as it announces plans for its first server chips made with the low-power designs of UK-based Arm Holdings.

AMD are spinning the wheel and changing the direction of the ship to avoid another head on collision with the Intel iceburg, set to sink AMD in the shrinking commodity server and performance workstation market. As AMD change strategy, the new company is getting wins like the CPU portion of the new Oak Ridge supercomputer (Titan, upgrading from last years Jaguar).

Promising, but it seems like AMD is late to the game again. They're reacting as opposed to being proactive.

None, but that's not my point. If AMD has an ARM chip, they're competing with companies who already have a strong foothold in the market. They're the underdog with no apparent advantage to warrant product makers choosing them over someone else. To illustrate how bad this is, TI (who owns AMD's old ARM business I believe) has pulled out of the smartphone/tablet market to focus on other embedded systems. This is because fierce competition from Qualcomm and Samsung has pushed them out. If AMD focuses on embedded systems, they're competing with the likes of TI and Nvidia.

It's good that they're trying to expand their business, but they reacted way too late and my fear is that they do not have enough resources to battle multiple companies in multiple markets. The way I see it they'll be fighting for scraps.

EDIT: if they're using them for high density computing clusters, then they might be ahead of the curve.
