Default Impressions of BenQ FP231W 23" 16ms wide-screen LCD

Here're my comments on the BenQ FP231W 23" wide-screen LCD panel I bought yesterday (and replaced today due to pixel defects). Currently driven by Radeon 9800XT soon to be X800XT (I hope). Thought you might guys like it, posted originally at ArsTechnica forums.

I've managed to exchange the monitor, look at 4 in total in 2 different stores. This one looked the best (i.e. I could not find any defective pixels but it doesn't mean it's perfect, we'll see), the other 3 had a range from about 7 to 10 or so. Most of them were very hard to see and were tiny, but none had 20+ like the first one I got. I had to use Powerstrip to reduce the DVI frequency to 59Hz otherwise I was getting lines and dots and I think the monitor was also switching to analog mode, though I'm not sure ('cuz artifacts would appear at bootup screen would go dark and no artifacts, but picture wasn't as crisp). I still don't like the controls on the left side wall, with no labels it makes it hard to know what's pressed.

Here are some more general comments about the monitor:

-- The stand is height adjustable but does not swivel to portrait view like the HP.

-- Brightness AND contrast are adjustable even when using DVI mode.

-- Autoadjust seems to work well, even better than on my Dell 2001FP (which jamex now has, I hope you like it! )

-- On-screen display allows to adjust to scale 1:1 or aspect (to maintain aspect ratio) so you don't get the stretching but rather a black border. Generally scaling seems good but too early to comment.

-- Comes with a powerbrick that is heavier than Dell's but has no annoying LED on it. Other accessories included are USB cable, VGA cable, DVI cable, and uhhhhh.... that's about it. Comes with drivers for a USB webcam but no webcam is included, has a mount on top for installation of it though. Manual is mainly on the CD with just some brief quick setup guide, like Dell. Packaging is very similar to Dell's, comes in 2 pieces (stand and monitor separate), and there are no cables pre-attached (yay!)

-- Screen is very bright, currently reduced to 17 from default of 90!

-- Overall build quality is excellent, although the first one I had the power button wouldn't always work (maybe it was a dud overall).

-- Did I say I didn't like the buttons on the side?

-- Screendoor effect does not appear to be there, I tried to take another picture to show:

And for your enjoyment here are a couple of shots from Homeworld 2 and Far Cry running at 1920x1200 resolution:

And the obligatory desktop shot:

Gaming is excellent. It's as good, maybe evem a tad better, than my previous LCD, the Dell 2001FP which is also a 16ms panel. There's almost no visible motion blur/ghosting, overall it's a winner for games. DVDs I'm not sure, I only watched a bit of Raiders of the Lost Ark and it looked good but not enough to make a definite conclusion. There wasn't any ghosting visible in the DVD also.

You can have it set to 1:1 scaling, so if a game does not support wide-screen modes you'll have black borders on left and right with no stretching. You can also have it strechted to fill the entire screen.

Is there really no ghosting while gaming? If the answer is yes, how much do they run? Thanks.

Oh and what is the native res?

It's practically non-existent, and to my eyes indistinguishable from a CRT. Native res is 1920x1200 and I paid $2500 Canadian for it. HP makes a similar model the L2335 that costs I think around $1700 US and is not available in Canada.

Image-wise it is very close to Dell's offering (same manufacturer for both panels), but this one has no screendoor effect that some notice/are bothered by in the Dell. The 2001FP is $1550 at Dell's Canadian site I think, this one's $2500 at FutureShop. Dunno whether it's worth the price premium, but what the heck!

I would never trust benq again as a company. I bought a benq scanner and had so many problems with it and the company did not help at all. Here's the kicker, it was usb and would not install properly. I could see if it was parallel. They just make garbage. Although that monitor looks pretty sweet, although I greatly prefer crt. You also said you had 20 pixels off; that is awful, why would you by the same model again, should go with another brand.

I simply exchanged it and got one that appears to be flawless. Benq makes a lot of stuff these days, the Dell 2001FP is made by Benq for example. I think they improved considerably.

So there's no ghosting? Wow, that's awesome. I've been looking at the Apple 23" HD screen, but it uses this panel so I might just get this (I work in a computer store, so we can stock the Benq panels, but not Apple stuff) *and* I'd get staff discount

Woot.

More screenies please!!!

I think the wallpaper is under their wallpaper section in the science-fiction category. I can't remember the name of it right now since I'm at work but I'll check when I get home.
I may post more pics, but I'm a little busy so I can't guarantee anything sorry guys...
