Arrow Google Apologizes for GrandCentral Snafu

GrandCentral, a VoIP startup acquired by Google earlier this year, has been forced to abandon its "one number for life" pledge for a small number of users, representatives acknowledged late Monday. A Google spokesman said the company "sincerely apologize[s] for the inconvenience."

"We want to reassure all of our users that we remain committed to providing 'one number for life' that they can count on," a representative said in a statement. "We are taking steps to avoid any similar issues in the future."

Sites like TechCrunch began noticing blog postings complaining about the outages on Monday. Users were sent notices that their own number would be phased out in the near future, and replaced with a new Google number.

According to a Google spokesman, a carrier partner of GrandCentral told the VoIP company that they would be discontinuing their service in 30 days, and would no longer be able to connect calls. "We worked around the clock to transfer the majority of numbers affected by this to another partner, but this process didn't work for some (about 400 numbers)," the spokesman said in an email.

By now, all users have been contacted by email, so any GrandCentral users which have not been notified of a number change will keep their number, presumably for life.

Affected users will be able to use both the old and the new number until August 30, when only the new number will receive calls, Google said
