Default Analogue SuperNT

So after checking the website nearly every day for the past 8-10 months, Anologue finally had a notice about incoming stock on their SuperNT. On the day of, it was actually difficult to grab one. The site was having issues, but it finally went through after hammering the Add to Cart button for a bit.

It finally arrived on Sunday! This thing is fantastic. It seems very high quality, and even the packaging was kind of fancy. Even came with a nice box you can fold up for Super Turrican 2 that it has pre-installed. Something for display.

I haven't spent a ton of time with it yet, but I did fire it up and test out Super Mario World and Chrono Trigger. It's super crisp, bright, and looks fantastic. There's lots of video options, options for various scan line effects, etc. It's a large display on my CX48, and while Super Mario World looks great, Chrono Trigger is SUPER pixely. Odd thing to say for these games, but it does give you the option of shrinking the video screen. I may play with that a bit to find a nice balance.

Also purchased the 8bitdo SN controller for this too. Should be here soon.

Will give more thoughts/impressions when I play with it a bit more.

I want one so bad! Wasnt lucky enough to be able to add to cart that day.

OverclockN' was awesome enough to grab me one and ship it out to me, arriving later this week. Thank you again, and thankfully Analogue allowed QTY of 2.

Awesome find!

I've been eyeing the NES version for some time, especially since it has an option to increase the sprite limit. For games like TMNT3, I think this could really help.

Lots of people are building MISters these days, which is arguably a better option in many ways... but as far as I know you still can't use actual cartridges. If someone created a cartridge-slot module, you could pair that with a MISter and basically build your own Analog NT.

Happy to help, and I know you would have done the same. Different times were living in for sure, and all the better if we can all help each other in whatever way. Even if it's simply finding a video game console.

Looking forward to your impressions/thoughts.

Yeah, I thought heavily about the MISter. But I really like collecting the cartridges, even though I buy less and less as time goes on. They're just getting so expensive.

Just a quick word on the absurdity of current game prices.

I am almost certain its a bubble, and will burst at some point and prices will fall back down for most games.

My theory is there's a relatively small group of actual long time game collectors that are always buying and selling, but this past year there was a huge influx of newcomers into the game collecting hobby. Whether they got in just to game in the pandemic when they couldn't really go anywhere else, or to collect for something to do, my guess is a lot of them are not going to stick with it for the long haul and will jump ship and sell off when they realize its not what they want to spend all their money on.

There will of course be a small amount of retention but most will be out. I give it a year or two max from now, once we reach near herd immunity and life returns to semi-normal. Can't wait.

Hey OverclockN', was just wondering about the cartridge slot on this thing. When inserting a game how does it feel? Does the cart lock in firm, or is it a bit wobbly? Is it tight or loose to remove a cart? Have you had any issues at all with the game not loading or glitching because you didn't insert the cart well enough?

I thought it might show what it's like a bit better in a video. Took this quick.

The cartridge seats into place with light effort, has a nice click to it. It does wobble around with a slight touch or even moving the console around, but it's actually in there very firmly. You can see how I can lift the entire thing and shake it, and then it actually takes considerable effort to remove the cart.

Because of that firm seat, I've never had a single loading or glitch issue in any game I've tried yet. So far, it's worked flawlessly.

Oh wow, cool. Thanks for doing the video.

Its kind of weird that it goes in firm with a good click and you can lift the whole system from the cartridge, but still wobbles. I guess I am used to my top loader which games insert firmly and absolutely no wobbling. But if the wobbling doesn't affect it as far as losing the connection and glitching the game out, I guess its fine. I'm sure they have tested that extensively anyways.

Well, I never tried moving it around while it was actually running a game. I was just testing for startup. I guess I assumed someone wouldn't be moving it around and it wasn't an issue. But, maybe it's a possibility?

So, I just now went ahead and tried it. And yeah...don't do that. With FFIII running in game, I just wiggled the console. The game flopped around a bit and it instantly glitched out and went to a black screen. So...yeah, try not to move it around in use.

Yep, that's what I was afraid of

Thanks for being the guinea pig on that. I'll definitely be sure not to bump the console while playing, kind of the same as with the original NES front loader.

FWIW, I've seen similar adhesive pads at hardware stores, maybe even dollar stores, for less than what Amazon is charging. Some use a 3D printed slot insert.

Yeah I'll check in my local stores for them.

I saw that 3D printed part too when searching. I think its a bit overkill, these furniture pads should do the trick fine.

Oh neat. I may do that too. I'm not sure it'll ever be an issue in my case, but it's so simple...why not?

Here's my Super NT. Love this thing! Analogue knows how to make a proper clone console. I will be playing the hell out of my SNES cart collection in beautiful lag free HD for years to come.

This is my second FPGA console, and its of equal or better quality than my Hi-Def NES. Has pretty much the same core software settings, except they added a frame buffer with the Super NT to achieve exactly 60Hz like the original SNES NTSC hardware. Although I prefer just leaving at the default zero delay mode.

I went with disabling interpolation to get a sharper image, so I'm using these integer settings to get uniform pixels and smooth motion with no "shimmer" effect when the screen is scrolling:
