AMD Rage3D Editorial - AMD Renames Juniper to HD 6700 Series
As feared, AMD have embraced that old and ignoble tradition of filling in line up holes by using last generation technology. AMD are at least honest about the roots of their change and specific in their target for the rebadged HD 5700 series - OEMs. What does our local cave dweller think about this decision?

imho,

They're still good chips that still can being in nice revenue. They have similar feature sets and see no harm really. This may bother some idealists though!

Well AMD doesnt have any new/revised chips after the 6900 (new Arch) and 6800 (Refined cypress). I wonder why they didnt just 'barts' the juniper chip to make it truly faster than the 4870, since the 5770 is more or less equal and slightly below it. And they could have given it UVD capabilities in hardware couldnt they? Like the IGP's?

They should have made 2GB 6800 cards and made the 1GB version the 6700 series. Why have so many chip versions anyhow? The HD 5000 line was nuts.

As this is a sticker and possibly firmware + driver, it's advantages to AMD are absolutely minimal cost. Going through a whole new set of architecture design, validation, prototype & tapeout, board validation and so on would put a dent into that cost saving.

I would have liked to see a 'Barts'd Juniper, it had great possibilities for the $100-$150 price point.

MVC (Blu-ray) changes cannot be offered via a software update, it requires BIOS changes and qualification for it.

I love how when Nvidia does this, the raging fanboys tear a hole in the space-time continuum with their Internet rage. When ATI does this, all we hear are crickets chirping.

Except that NVIDIA got a pass for the 570/580 being full GF100's while AMD got slammed for making Cypress into Barts with new functionality.

Besides which, I don't see any of NVIDIA's 'OEM only pages' being as clear about which product was rebranded to become the 100/200/300 series.
