Default Warhammer 40,000

By a strange sequence of coincidences, I've become interested in Warhammer 40,000. I've already bought the rulebook and the Codex for the Chaos Space Marines. Does anyone on Rage play?

I'm refering to the tabletop game, not the PC game (although I hear the PC game is pretty good).

I may be getting back into it sometime soon (played Eldar and Tyranids for a while, but it got VERY expensive and I take forever to paint my stuff).

It's a fairly complex and very time/money consuming hobby to get into, but if you have some friends who do, or a local game store to play games with people, it can be quite fun.

You may want to check out their main website: http://www.games-workshop.com/
or if you're interested in more obscure units:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/

I would reccomend getting a few troops and trying to get a hold on the rule and turn structure. Then maybe get a few from a different race and play friends, or better yet, get some friends who play and play them to figure out the little quirks in gameplay, I used to refer to the book all the time, but as long as you're consistant, you can play really any rules you like.

Then the game stores or local tournaments are an option. I wouldn't reccomend those until you have a decent sized army, are fairly familliar with the rules, and know a little strategy. Depending on where you go, they may not be interested in taking time to start someone new to the hobby.

I remember back in the day when me and my friends were into warhammer 40k, I had a Dark Eldar army (like 2,000 point army, i'm not sure its been awhile). But yeah those were the good old days when I actually had time to spend on making and painting models all day.

I was also into Warhammer fantasy which almost equally as fun, but since it wasn't as popular as 40k it was hard to get into.

It was weird how I got introduced to Warhammer 40K. I was at the comic store (its a HUGE comic store), and bumped into an old friend who was hauling a crate into the store. I asked what the crate was for, and then he spent the next hour introducing me to the game.

At the comic store, they have 10 tables set up, and about 20 different full terrains to use (urban, desert, jungle, etc). You can walk in any time and play for free

I've decided on the Chaos Space Marines, I'm going to buy the starter pack tomorrow for $100, and the $40 intro paint set with clippers.

Since your getting into it, From now on don't throw anything out (especially anything thats styrofoam, bottles, toilet paper rolls) they work excellent for making your own terrain, don't waste 20-50$ on terrain at the store when you can make stuff yourself that looks better.

have fun.

I had some friends that played mechwarrior for awhile, and I played sometimes too. Although I never bought any of the figures, which is too bad 'cause they were friggin' sweet!

Yes, Dawn of War is definitely one of the best strategy games I've ever played.

I'm interested in getting into the whole theme, but not sure which race to explore first. The Tau seem more my style.

Pick whichever one you like, be it looks or their tactics. Dont buy a race that's cheaper just to save money, you probably wont like it as much as what has already captured your interest (the TAU).

I bought my set earlier today and I'm going to build/paint it this weekend.

One of the dudes at the comic store said the TAU are great for long range attacks, but once you get close to them (assault), they get owned.

BTW, nice quote Brynn. I've had the original quote printed out and pinned to my cube at work for some time now.

Tau are a total ***** to play. Sure they shoot long distances but their ability to hit sucks. Although once you get good with Tau they're a scary army for sure. With the release of the new codex some of the stuff that made Tau almost impossible to use has been revamped so their prime ability (mobility) can be taken advantage of.

Painting needs training
My interest in WH40K started with Dawn of War but i lack time to bother with the tabletop game. Though the books might be an idea
Or just buy some figures
