Last night, I was in the PICU ward with my friend.
Her 3 year old daughter was diagnosed last week with neuroblastoma.
About 500 cases in the US per year.
It's the most aggressive form of the cancer, also. Doctors said the 6" Wilms tumor they removed last weekend probably developed in all of 3 weeks.
On Saturday, they rushed her back to the ER. She had been vomiting bile for 32 hours. Surgery a few hours later proved two blockages in her stomach. That fast.
The cancer is in her lymph nodes. Chemo and radiation begin Wednesday.
30% chance of survival.
My friend has a great sense of humor, always. She has 3 daughters, all under the age of 7. All she wants is for her life, the life she thought was crazy and nuts and THOUGHT was so stressful before, to come back. That life was hers not even 2 weeks ago. She has lost 15 pounds in the past 10 days from stress. Her humor, even now, could keep an audience in stitches, but it's a dark humor now.
When I excused myself to go home late last night, I felt she hated me. I saw the look - the look that said no matter how crazy my day could ever be, she was envious of it.
