ATI Technologies ATI Silencer 3 Installation (9800XT) Little Help

I just picked up an Ati Silencer 3 for my 9800 PRO (XT pcb), and am ready to slap this baby on. Ive installed an Arctic Silencer before, and it seems like it is pretty similar.

Now this heatsink also covers the RAM chips. Is it recommended I put some Arctic Silver 5 or ceramique on the chips before?

Also there will be thermal paste obviously on the GPU. A thin layer of AS5 should be good on there too. I assume I should apply like I would on a CPU (paper thin layer spread across)?

I've been away from the comp/modding scene for a couple months as I've been focusing on school, so just need my mind refreshed.

Thanks for the help.

I wouldnt recommend Silver5 for the ram, for the GPU definitly. Ceramic maybe or even a regular white paste for the memory

You get silver on the wrong pins and kiss the card GOODBYE.

Just use the regular stuff or ceramic if you have it -- key here is non electrically conductive material !

best of luck !

The paste which comes with the card is extremely effective. It is very thick and sticky though, and nearly imposible to spread in a thin layer. Better to put a very small drop on the GPU and let the pressure of the H/S spread it out.

Yes. Thanks for giving me a heads up on the AS5. I remember someone telling me about how it is conductive. I may just play it safe using ceramique on both the ram and GPU. Especially since ceramique is very close up to par with AS5 in terms of cooling.

I used AS5 on the gpu and the ceramic stuff the silencer comes with on the memory. It worked out just fine on mine. Like Razmadaz says, you dont want AS5 getting onto any pins.
