Radeon 8500 -- Bought card, returned card, bought again....questions???
Originally, I bought the Radeon 8500 and loaded it onto a clean install of WinXP Pro. Everything went well. I ran 3dMark2001 and scored just over 8000. I'm using a Promise FastTrak 100 controller card whereby I had my Quantum AS Fireball connected to the main channel and two 30 Gig IBM drives as Master/Slave on the secondary channel of the Promise card.
I returned the Radeon 8500....don't ask why.
I bought the Radeon 8500 card again...retail card as before also.
Now, I did a clean install of WinXP Home and loaded the latest unofficial Radeon drivers 3286. All went well. This time, I also loaded the latest Intel Chipset drivers for my Intel 850 P4T-E Asus MOBO. When loading them, they installed but did not ask me to reload the system. This I found odd, but there were no errors and I restarted anyways. The other thing different is that I now have the two IBM 30Gig hard drives setup in a Stripe Array off the main channel. They are recognized as 1 58Gig partition. The Quantum is setup as a Master on the secondary channel partitioned in two. I ran 3DMark2001 and score just over 7500.
What's different here from the first time around...
Could this Radeon be slower than the first or defective?
Is WinXP Pro faster than WinXP Home?
Did loading the chipset drivers screw me up?
Isn't setting up the two IBM drives in a stripe array faster than having them on their own as I did with the Quantum the first time around?
I forget what ATI drivers I used the first time around when I had the card.
Any suggestions...sorry for the length of this.

What can go wrong might go wrong...
Sometimes it's a little different how windows goes in or a file or a driver just isn't perfectly right or a new harddrive added makes a difference good or bad...
All I can say is if you have somthing good stay with it, returning
the other card that is running at it's peak and was made perfectly you threw away and got another that is probably clocked a little lower or the ram is running at 3.8 ns instead of 3.6 ns or something like that, it makes a difference in benches I can tell you that for sure. So I personally think it's the way you configured your PC and the card is fine, how does it look and run, smooth ??
