Default 7700k overclocking

Got a 7700k. Delidded it. Popped it in my LAN gaming machine. Started OCing.

Here's the result:

I'll post benches later. GTX 1070 @ 2062/8800 so it won't break records but man is this fast...

Cool, now test it for longer then 100 seconds. Probably 4 hour test of RealBench will do.

And send the pic to Kyle " Slick Dick " Bennette and laugh.

I work my way through IBT's testing stages before moving on to realbench for durability testing. I'll probably run that tonight.

Nice man. Was waiting to see what Raisin offered but I already think 7700k is the better choice for a gaming rig.

Thought about it, but then they finally got a decent chip in house and posted it on the front page. 7600k 5.1/3600. 100MHz more than that won't make Kyle cry. Would have been great if I had this a month ago though.

It's too bad it's necessary to delid the CPU to keep it from self destructing due to heat. I don't know why Intel had to cut costs by using the absolute shittiest TIM between the heatspreader and the CPU. I'd honestly rather they had just charged $5-$10 more for the K series.

I never even heard of deliding to be honest. I just googled then you tubed.. this is BS from Intel. People making a tiny adjustment with TIM and it drops 15-25 degrees.. wtf. Your paying all this Intel tax and they don't ship there CPU's right, forcing people to mod.

I know some people enjoy doing stuff like this. But I would assume 85-95% of people do not.

Then again with 1 little razer blade it can be done.

RE: Delidding

If you haven't done this yet and you own an Ivy Bridge or newer non-HEDT chip, you're cooking your processor and losing out on 100-200MHz, easy. I started delidding when I bought my 3770k. Saw a 30C+ drop in max. temperatures. I always use the razor method, have a pretty steady hand and have yet to damage a chip. I've done it to 4 of my own chips and 4 more for friends/customers. A word of caution though: it is a dangerous operation. The older chips have SMCs (surface mounted components) that can be ripped off by a razor whereas the newer chips do not have these but instead have very thin PCBs that are easily bent. On Skylake and newer chips if you use the razor method you can be virtually assured the corner into which you insert your razor will end up being slightly bent due to the pressure of working the razor into an edge between the IHS and the PCB.

Something I've always wondered about, and was never really able to get a straight answer from someone trustworthy..

When you delid your CPU.

How much does that change the heatsink pressure down on the the core. Knowing that Intel's specifications dictated measurements on the socket height, how much does this change when you've removed something that the specifications expect?

I would imagine this could decrease clamping pressure dramatically with some heatsinks that don't have adjustment for this.

Such as my Corsair H80, the screws only go down so far on the studs, leaving the pressure from the "ears" to clamp the waterblock/pump down on the CPU. Removing the IHS, would create more distance, giving me less clamp pressure..

So..

Has this been a problem in your experience?

From what ive seen they de-lid them and add liquid metal or another compound and but the heat spreader back on. I could be wrong but that's what I have seen.

And nice OC Shaidar

I have seen that as well and I'm sure that those doing so, are worried about the same thing I have been worried about.

Beyond that logistical problem, it seems counter-intuitive. Risk breaking the CPU (however minimal it may be given your skills), just to replace some thermal compound and put the IHS back on?

I've seen some reviews on just that scenario and it nets hardly anything, that to me doesn't seem like its worth the risk.

If you're going to delid and get the results Shaidar has attained, I'm certain its a bare CPU die, and why wouldn't you want to remove excess things between your heat source and thermal solution?

You can buy this kit for around $40-50. It's pretty safe method to delidding and relidding. I've used vice method before and it worked out fine.

This probably wouldn't help me with my haswell cpu. It starts to get a little shaky at 4.3 Ghz.. no matter what. If I was stable at 4.4 or 4.5 at a higher voltage I would consider trying this Delid. But I did not hit the silicone lottery.

I was asking about clamp pressure without the relid.
