Laptop reads DVD movies but wont read data CDs...why?

Hi!
A customer at my store brought back a Sony Vaio VGN-FS660 because while it reads DVD movies fine it wont read any CDs. I tried multiple data CDs and none will read at all. Anyone Ideas whats going on?

Is the sessions closed on the data cds? Sometimes readers cant read data cds unless the disk is closed. If the cd is left open for additional files, you may have problems. Or it could be an autorun issue if you are using XP. Try rightclicking on the drive and hit explorer to test that out.

I've seen that behavior before. Try a manufactured data CD, not a CDR. Even an ordinary music CD would be fine. If it can't read normal CD's, the drive will probably need to be replaced.

i had this problem, not with a laptop but with my old dvd-rw drive, about a few weeks after moving into my flat the drive just refused to fully install anything, then refused to read any type of cd, however it read dvd's just fine.. it was a cheap pos anyways not even sure if it was branded or not, but its now become my new mug coaster and i got myself a nice new (expensive) sony dru-800 dvd-rw-dl.. and ive not bothered burning a single disc on it cd or dvd..
