New PSP Hardware Sells One Million Units in Japan
PSP-2000 hits a million two weeks quicker than old hardware.
The original PSP is a wonderfully designed piece of hardware – except that it’s not particularly light or thin, and that pesky square button doesn’t feel quite right. Enter the PSP-2000, the redesigned hardware that retains all the good qualities of the original while losing 33 percent of its weight and 19 percent of its thickness.
Thanks to its makeover, the newer PSP has won over the hearts of gamers in Japan, selling over one million units since its debut on September 20. Interestingly, it appears that the new PSP is more attractive than ever, as it hit the million mark two weeks faster than the original PSP-1000 hardware did.
Aside from going on a diet, the new PSP is more versatile and accessible. In Japan, a “1 Seg” add-on device allows the viewing of television programs over the air on the hardware’s 4.3-inch screen. The PSP-2000 may also output to a television for expanded gameplay or video viewing.
Also boosting the PSP’s popularity in Japan is its wide array of available colors. On December 13, SCEI will release two limited edition “deep red” bundles, one with a TV peripheral tuner, stand and 32MB memory stick, and the other with just a the 32MB card.
