Default r300 taped out, team west and team east on r400 and r450

the http://www.theinquirer.net/12040207.htm

"SOURCES CLOSE to ATI's plans tell the INQUIRER that its Athlon and Pentium 4 motherboards are likely to arrive far earlier than anyone imagined.
According to the normally reliable source, although speculation is that the boards based on the chipsets are due in September, we will see products using them as early as June.

The firm is ramping up its battle against other players in the market including Nvidia, SIS, Via and ALI.

The last player seems to be left a little behind in the race, but of course the biggest competitor of all is Intel, which manages to have its cake and eat it by both licensing the Pentium 4 design and selling its own chipset products against its customers' versions.

In other news, the same source said that despite speculation by the press – and we've done our share of that too – the R300 graphics processor unit (GPU) has taped out, and engineers in locations on both the West Coast and East Coast of the US are already working on future revs – the R400 and the R450.

The source suggested that we'd be likely to see products based on the R300 far earlier than anyone expected."

!!AND ITS RUMORS!! ...and still fun, isn't it?!?

The only reason there hasn't been any replies is because the Inquirer always has stories that are way off. Everything about the R300 says when DX9 is out, so will that card be. Go here and read. This is DIRECTLY from ATI. http://www.reactorcritical.com/inter...ati_2002.shtml

yes i know, but i tend to sit back and watch the flamewars/spec-wars/rumors and all that dreaming about the gaming-worlds to come anyways before a product is actually released. so i thought "hey, that fits in quite snuggly!"

Actualy it';s not that hard to belive as the roadmaps showed these cards as ready for Feb 2002 . But the things are clear now as ATi declared that they won't release the cards won't be released until Microsoft releases it's DX9 .

I agree with that mentality. This also gives ATi a chance to make sure their drivers are up to spec for the R300 -- and DirectX 9.

Actually reading aout the R400 and R450 doesn't impress me at all; in fact AMD is already working on its 9 th generation processors while the 8th is not out yet.
It seems totally logic to start working on new technology up to 3 years before the official annoucement\release; Indeed, making a working complex hardware is just too painfull and hard.

Actually, the Inq posts and spreads just about every possible rumor about specs and releases for any given chip...ONE of them is bound to be right. So when the R300 is made official, we'll see the Inq post a "told you so" link back to the one "accurate" blurb out of several hundred "other" articles they have on the R300!

They've had teams workign on the r400 for more than a year at this point.

laf, 6 or 12 month cycles are not 6 or 12 month cycles. each chip generation takes closer to 18-24 months to develop, and somes more, they are just always overlapping.
