Default F.E.A.R. Wow what a great game.

I played the demo when it first came out and wasn't impressed for some odd reason. Well I picked the game up a week ago and just finished it yesterday. All I can say is Wow! This had to be about the best game I have ever played. I can't find anything about it I didn't like. People said they thought it was spooky. I must be jaded because nothing about the game spooked me at all. I was totally enthralled with the storyline, and loved the way it all played out. The ending was about the only thing I could say that was sort of anti climatical, but I think its because most other games make the ending so hard as to make the game as a whole seem better. This game is a must have for any that have never really given it a chance as I did.

Played it through 7 times now on hard, cheated last time hardcore and had a blast doing nothing but hand to hand. Hand to hand combat with the Big baddies is fun but almost impossible.

it's a pretty decent game.
i still need to play extraction point, but i am too caught up in FEAR combat at the moment, although i think i might stop playing as the amount of people cheating has become stupid.

I gave up on it when it first came out because I could never get it to run well but tried it again patched to 1.08 and tossed in a gore mod over the weekend.

I have it running with the new widescreen res 1280x720 and it is running smooth. The shootouts just flat out rock in this game, one of the most intense FPS I have ever played, right there with DOOM III on the intensity scale.

I didn't like the expansion. . It was uber crap IMHO , and the ending just sucked big time.

But Fear itself, kicked a$$

FEAR was decent imo. It wasn't scary and I felt the bullet time felt out of place for a horror game. The guns were just spam wherever enemies pop out of or hand to hand which was alright.

Im lost.

How can FEAR kick ass and the expansion suck big time? The expansion improves on FEAR, with more baddies, better/more weapons. The only thing it was lacking, was the story wasn't really progressed much, and it made things more confusing.

Id rate FEAR as a meh shooter. It's good, but it's a long ways of the greats. Has far to many negative points in key areas for a FPS.

For one, the action itself is not equalled still. That with the super awesome atmosphere makes it one of the best shooters of all times. (personal opinion mind you,but i personally i just cannot get enough of the gunfights, it's different every time and still makes me say 'whoa.... awesome ! ' out loud )

I have played through it about 15 times now, i kid you not.

edit*
oh, and for the last time. BULLET TIME IS FOR NOOBS AND IT KILLS THE ACTION !!!! (don't use it, the action is more awesome without)

Yeah I hated the bullet time cause it made things way too damn easy and was out of place.

I only played it for a level or so when it came out on PC but I beat it on 360 the other day. good times.

I'll agree that bullet time was sort of cheating. I could slow time, run into a room and put my shotgun up to 5 guys faces and blow them away before I got hit by one shot

Dude that is one of the things I love the most about the game; the bullet time. It made it so much fun to do exactly what you were talking about. It made me feel like I was actually some sort of super soldier who had amazing reflexes and could move really really fast.

I also recently finished the game. It was really fun. Great action which felt satisfying.

I didn't find it scary at all, actually. Except that part when you are coming down the stairs, and the ghost girl appears behind you, and then another ghost shows up when you step off stairs. That freaked me out a little. Nevertheless, the atmosphere and environments were awesome.

And it plays smoothly with 2x AA on my x800xl.

I haven't tried the expansion yet, but I'll probably enjoy it even if it's "more of the same".

- The hardest thing about getting a Mac is telling your parents that you're gay.

- If I had the choice between being gay and owning a Mac, I would rather be gay, because if I owned a Mac I would be both gay and own a horrible computer.

- Imagine a giant cock flying towards your mouth, and there's nothing you can do about it. And you're like "Oh man, I'm gonna have to suck this thing", and you brace yourself to suck this giant cock. But then, at the last moment, it changes trajectory and hits you in the eye. You think to yourself "Well, at least I got that out of the way", but then the giant cock rears back and stabs your eye again, and again, and again. Eventually, this giant cock is penetrating your gray matter, and you begin to lose control of your motor skills. That's when the giant cock slaps you across the cheek, causing you to fall out of your chair. Unable to move and at your most vulnerable, the giant cock finally lodges itself in your anus, where it rests comfortably for 4, maybe 5 hours. That's what using Mac OSX is like.

I get how that could be nice, but for FEAR i found it cooler to be the underdog so to speak and for me it just killed the action.
Also that fast paced music (when you need to get to the roof for instance), awesome. Bullet time is out of place there. I only use it for those dumbass ceiling guns.

In crysis however, the fast movement will rock pretty hard. (you know, with the nano suit)

man, sooooo many jaded people out in the world these days....

I can see it now...

*Joe Average walks into a dilapidated old haunted house in the middle of nowhere with a friend durring the middle of the night...*

*A ghostly orb floats by, pauses for a moment and then begins to absorb the life force from Joe Average's friend, turning his lifeless corpse into smoldering ashes right in front of his eyes*

*Joe Average mutters "Wow, nice special effects!" and walks away...*

The new guns are great. But there is no ending. Just a few guys and end of game. Wow.. uber boring. Even the hospital level was just boring.

I wanted MORE enemies. I played it on medium. I wanted more stages like the parking garage level. Big baddies wanting to nail you.

But its just me!

Though it is a pretty crappy un-optimized engine.

I liked the hospital at the end of EP, it's pretty creepy, scary with headphones at night, with those fast little buggers.

On The hardest difficulty, the bullet time is needed in a lot of places.

Did you try playing it at night with the headphones on? I found if I tried playing it during the day or with just my speakers it wasn't nearly as fun or spooky.

There was nothing about the game that scared me after I was done playing it, just during the game there are a few moments that make you jump or yell "****ING ****!" whilst firing in all directions.

Then again, I went through the game kind of slowly, looking in every little place, where as when my friend was playing through it and something happened, he'd always look in the wrong direction or be looking somewhere else and completely miss what happened.

I just installed FEAR again. I played trough it on December 2005, every night around midnight, with headphones on, and boy, did it scare the hell out of me! One of my favorite shooters.

Gonna have to get the expansion...

I accidently wrote this in the console forum, so I'll pop it in the proper gaming section and add that XPoint is good, but Per Mandate sucked, it was like somebody else made it and cocked it up.

-------------------------------

Same kind of genre, but 2 completely different games, however, I'm thinking that Fear might be the best FSPer I've ever played, but let me explain that....

I last played Fear on a 6800GT and was limited to 16x1200 with God knows how many IQ limitations, but the ingame performance test said I was averaging 33fps, which I felt was good enough to play thru.

Anyway, this time round I've bumped the res to 1920x1200* and absolutely every IQ setting is maxed except that aa is 4x, but af is 16x.....and the IQ and realism is sensational+ Fear has excellent sound and use of sound.

The game still gives me the creeps despite playing it for the 4th time and with the IQ and physics+ the best close range combat of any game I've ever played, I can't help but consider this one of the best games ever made.....now yes, perhaps it could've done with a slightly quicker pacing, but with the amazing IQ, I no longer find it a problem.

Intense close combat, beautiful slo mo and physics and excellent use of sound make this one of the best, so if you have a 4850 or thereabouts, crank this mofo up to 1920x1200 and have a blast.

*courtesy of the WS gaming forum.

re-Quake4.....I'm also maxing this one at 1920x1200 and it looks a lot better than last time I played it on the 6800GT, but it isn't impressing me as much as Fear is, that said, Q4 is a well built game, a pretty game, and has some very slick weapons, but gameplay is a bit too standard FPSer feeling for me to get all warm and fuzzy over it, but it's definately worth buying now that it's so cheap and you can max the hell out of it.

both of the expansions are tougher and focus a bit more on action but also have some surprise effects not found in the original that work well.near the end they become more like serious sam, which kinda doesnt fit with fear, but for the most part they're good.

Unfortunately F2 isn't in the same league....it's one of the more dumbed down games of the last few yrs, which is appalling considering it's heritage.

Fear also has incredible dust, debris, sparks, smoke etc when the ingame settings are maxed.
I would love to see this mofo at 1600p....and I think I will in the future.

Not being creeped out is not a badge of honor. It does not make you cool or more of a man. All it means is that a person is deficient in his ability to properly put himself into a receptive state of mind. It is somewhat sad, as there is no gaming experience quite like it.

Horror games are my favorite genre and I go to great lengths to ensure that I get as worked up as possible before I sit down to play them. I might read a few "true life" ghost stories, maybe look at some creepy urban ruins, make sure I am alone, turn off the lights and sit in the dark for a while before I finally throw on my headphones and immerse myself in the game.

I just don't view fear as a horror game, for me you are simply too powerful to be scared of anything.

I still love the game as the whole matrix/max payne slowmo thingie makes it an awesome action game.
